2008 tacoma. I've had this issue twice. After letting the truck sit for a little while (1st time was a few hours 2nd time over night) I go to start it and it will start right away but feels like it runs out of gas, then try 3 or 4 more times and won't really even catch. 1st time after trying 3 or 4 times it fired right up, 2nd time I hit the tank a little while turning the key and it fired right up. Sounds like a fuel pump but I didn't really hit the tank that hard and it's been a month and a half in between it happening, and I drive it every day to work about 80 miles round trip. It has 180k on the motor.

Fuel pump resistor, fuel pump relay, fuel pump. Would check and replace in that order.... tho an 08 with 180k, id replace the fuel pump with a URD unit and an external filter for sure.

Fuel pump resistor, right in front of your battery. When it acts up, get a small jumper (alligator clips and wire). Unplug the resistor, short out the leads. If it runs good, there’s more likely your problem and replace with an expensive (+$100) Oem resistor.
    Just my $.02CAD.

are you leaving the key in the ignition when not running for more than 5 hours? Try pulling the key out then inserting it opposite. Really sounds like the immobilizer kicking in to me.

I agree with Koditten. My 08 does this exact thing. I just live with it.

It only happens when I leave my keys in the ignition and leave the truck sitting for a while. Usually it dies within 3 seconds, and it will keep happening until I remove the key from the ignition, put some distance between the key and the ignition, then try to start it again. At that point it works.

edit: just to make sure it is acting like mine....starts right up normal, runs for about enough time to go into reverse, then quickly dies, without a sputter. That’s what mine does.

Then likely not the same issues I have. Mine only does it ONLY when I leave the keys in the ignition. Sounds like others may be on the right track.

I can admit when I am wrong
