All my rigs are purpose built. From crawling to camping. I also enjoy a nice stock truck for what that’s worth. Toyota’s are the jam!
    It’s kinda like dominos.

Steel comes in, talented craftsman put in the sweat, tubes get bent and plates get cut.
More skilled people get involved, powder goes on, more detailed people get involved for QC and packing.
Then even more people get involved, crates get on the trucks, in which other people come into the mix at the fedex hub.
Finally you get your glorious Bumper that you only have had a small deposit in thus far.
Glorious it has been! I can’t remember all the names involved, but Big Up to them for getting me my badass armor!

I was thinking about building an APP that enable the user to change out armor on their vehicle to get a quick VR look.
But I got my hands full with the SlingPot!

Speaking of armor, it’s time to get the rear of these trucks in order.

Erick @state48overland lets get an overland bumper going on this Taco and FJC. I wanna get these things in que.

That way I will have those 5.29s in before they get here.

Actually have another question but this one is relevant to everyone (I think). At what point do you think I should be looking at a regear to 4.88s to keep stock-ish or better acceleration?

Currently have for static weight: (when front bumper arrives):

    • Demello Baja Steel Front Bumper w/winch
    • TRD Pro Aluminum Skid
    • Pizza Cutter 33s
    • Steel Rock Sliders
Planning on adding in the not toooo distant future:
    • Steel rear bumper
    • Steel belly skid
Probably won't add a bed rack unless a hot deal comes my way and I just can't pass it up.

    Thoughts?

You will have the tire size and weight to justify the 4.88's now. We run 4.88's on our Gen 3. with 34" tires, Diamondback cover or RTT/bed rack at certain times. Fully belly under armor and front and rear bumpers with a winch, Group 31 battery, bunch of lights. Brought a lot of the torque back. Most will say run 5.29's and be done with it. Just wasn't an option yet when we did ours. I will say 5.29s have their place. Based on customer feedback. Seems the guys with serious weight, trailers, and/or larger tire size (34"+) have better feedback with 5.29s vs. guys who stayed around 33" tires with 5.29's

There is some good info here.
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/the-5-29-mega-thread.557305/

Some have put the 4.88s in and the Trans is still hunting at times.

I have been doing exhausting research on this. As Erick mentioned, people put 4.88s in, as that’s what was out at the time. I have talked to several that have done both.
Some have done 4.88s and then did 5.29s and have had better drivability even with 33s. I found some good videos from the people at Nitro on YouTube that explains in depth.
I am by no means telling you to stay away from the 4.88s, I just want to share with you my findings.

Do a YouTube search “Tacoma Nitro”

I wonder what the OVTune for 4.88s will do as far as trans hunting. That is assuming it comes out!

Adding HPs to the mix won’t fix what’s going on. The truck should have never come with the gears that are in it.
It’s the fact that the truck has two overdrive gears and makes its power at 3500-4K. So you will still have to be getting on it to get it moving.
This is why 1st gear non existent.

My understanding is that he is actually optimizing the shift points and trans behavior for the gears. I'm just concerned about 5.29s because 90% of my driving is highway at 75mph-80mph.

Your correct it does optimize the shifting for sure. It would be different if your just adding HPs.
I think your correct at the OVTune assuming it will help you, however After all my research.
I think gears are going to get you there. The motor and Trans do work fine with the proper gearing. Would 4.88s bring your RPMs down a 200 hundred rpms, yes it would. But, I bet that with 5.29s you will still be in the low 2k RPM range with 5.29s, due to the fact that 6th gear is barely ever hit currently.
I am in a different boat than you, as my truck weighs more.
I have seen these trucks with 35s at hwy speeds not screaming rpms.
Keep me posted. I would like to know as much about this as I can. This is one costly mod.

    Direct from Nitro:

Nitro Gear Package for 16+ Toyota Tacoma is one of Nitro’s biggest sellers. Why? Because these trucks need regeared. The Tacoma has a very tall overdrive in 5th AND 6th gear to turn low RPMS. The new 3.5l V6 makes plenty of horsepower, but needs to rev. Even with stock tires we have found the 6th gear is nearly useless, the gearing is so high that the transmission is constantly shifting. In a STOCK Tacoma Automatic 6th gear puts you at ~1500 RPM @ 60MPH. This simply does not work. You may not realize it, but you probably are hardly ever in 6th gear unless you are almost going downhill. By regearing you can bring the motor back to the RPM it needs to be. This will improve Economy, Performance, and shifting. This is one of the most important modifications you can make to your late model Tacoma whether on a stock truck, or especially when running oversized tire. This is the only way to properly compensate for inadequate factory gearing and the increase in tire diameter. We often hear people are worried they will turn high rpm’s if they regear. This is simply not the case. Remember, the Auto trans has a double overdrive. See the below examples:

    Example

Stock 2019 Tacoma TRD Offroad w/ Auto Trans:

    3.91 & Stock Tire, ~1500 RPM @ 60 MPH, ~1750 RPM @ 70 MPH (NOT ENOUGH RPM!)

    4.88 & Stock Tire, ~1950RPM @ 60 MPH, ~2200 RPM @ 70 MPH

    33” 4.88, ~1750 RPM @ 60 MPH, ~2000 RPM @ 70 MPH)
    33” 5.29, ~1900 RPM @ 60 MPH, ~2250 RPM @ 70 MPH)

*Manual trans RPM figures will be higher.

    Auto:

    Stock-33” 4.88 Most Popular

    33”+ 5.29 Most Popular

    Manual:

    32-34” 4.88 Most Popular

    35”+ 5.29 Most Popular

Yeah buddy, that’s exactly what I read.
Which is why I am rolling with the 5.29s.
For me specifically I have crossed the point of no return. The entire truck is almost armored, who knows I may wanting bigger tires later and I tow my Offroad trailer that has a KTM500 on the back.
I too had a hard time stomaching such an increase in gear, however with so many reporting a good outcome. This feels the right way for me to go. I would just prefer to leave the motor stock if possible.

I've had a handful of folks asking if we got the bed rack done yet, what are my thoughts and to post up pics..... Well after field testing a few prototypes/models for PAKRAX- I can verify that a 100% steel made bed rack makes a huge difference when bombing through the desert and rocky trails with gear/RTT. I've done the bed bars, have had another rack, I've ruined alu load bars in the past, so working with PAKRAX and getting the product launched on our website has been a great experience. 2- Tacoma models to choose from (PAKRAX guarantees no lead times and these bed racks are ready to ship and come powder coated). Pics below just showing the rack off. I will be posting up a deals & coupons code for anyone interested in this. (cab height version and PAK accessories coming soon-their website is under construction-please be patient)
