    Ladies (?) and Gents -

Total newbie to the Taco scene, but looking for some advice on a 2001 Black Toyota Tacoma Double Cab, V6, 4WD SR5 listed locally. It's auto (i know...) with 128K with an undercover bed topper and auto-start. Power windows and locks. He wants $10,500 which seems a bit rich - so my question to the forum is - what's this thing worth?

Thanks so much for your help! I've seen you guys give great advice to other members and hoping for the same on my very first post.

    Best,

From the pics I'd say this is a nice unit, well kept and a good looker. You can always offer something less figuring to split the difference by the time you shake hands. All in all...........do it...........and good luck!!:D

If that were a California truck, you'd expect to pay $12-15k. It looks nice! Be sure to use the search function and look up frame rust as that's a problem with 1st gen Tacomas.

Frame rust is an issue with all Taco's.

If the truck is good shape like the pic's suggest its a good deal. Toyota's hold their value. It's amazing how well they hold value.

Nice truck. Check on the frame, ball joints, and timing belt . Talk him down to 9 9.5 thou... the tailgates beat up, dent in the front bumper and it's not a TRD. Good luck!

If that truck was for sale around here in Pensacola it would be listed higher then 10.5K…(in good condition of course). Good luck!

The price seems a little high--13 year old truck with a few dents and dings. depending on your state--price is relevant. check local listings.
    Truck LOOKS nice.
I too agree with the 9-9.5 Price.
Do not forget to point out the defects to the seller--see if he will reduce his selling price.
Do a little research to see how much repairs will cost-that will give you some barganing leverage.
    GOOD LUCK

OK guys - went to go check it out today and it does feel strong. My brother pulled a Car Fax and it mentions an accident in 2001. Once I have more deets, I'll let you know what was in it.

The truck is from Alaska - 4 owners. Our man is a West Point instructor and not big on not getting his way. $9.5k firm. Very firm, like his handshake.

Tires have about a year left in them. Interior is not pristine, but I could live it it. Handles well, brakes well, and belts and fluids have been recently changed. He took it in for the 105K mile dealer review, but it invoice does not state a timing belt change. Not sure how worried about that I should be.

Here are the crappy photos I took.

    Thanks for all the advice!

That's a lot of rust. I see some rust damage in the bed too. After seeing these pic's, I'd walk.. But I also live in Az where we don't get rust damage much and its easy to find truck with 0 rust.

We need someone with some experience in the rust belt.. It would be a great deal if it weren't for the rust.
Does it have the elocker? I don't see the TRD decals

It looks like it was used as a truck lol. But surface rust is as simple as sanding then repainting, personally I think the frame is in okay-good condition, probably could get sanded down then bedlined. And Idk my wheel wells on the inside of the bed are gone on one side almost lol but it can be fixed.

Miles are a big part of this truck I'd say and probably the majority of the reason behind the price. I mean if you wanna put time and more money into something it can always become what you wanted in the truck. O jeez I just realized it was a DC I would take this in a heart beat but I also like fixing things as long as the motor is strong I say 9.5 is decent. considering around here it would be like 11k. To give you an idea I just spent 7K on 97 Ext cab sr5 with 225K lol but a 9 page carfax showing it was always maintained at a Toyota dealership which according to carfax added like 2k to value. Anyways personally I think it looks good.

Ok after purchase of this truck youll have to
    -Add tires =$1000
    -Clean rust =$????
    -Clean interior a bit-$60

Its kind of weird seeing a doublecab without TRD

Frame looks decent, nothing scary looking.

Body looks like its been used as a truck (as others have said)

Bed is rusted through behind the wheelwell. Take a wire wheel to it and that hole will open up more. Mine was the same way. Small hole opened up into a much larger hole as I cleaned the rust away. I cut the bad metal out, welded in a patch then put the drop-in bedliner back in as my welds look like crap.

If you're looking to lift it and go play in the rocks, its not bad. However, if it'll be your DD, I'd keep looking.

Not to knock your idea or anything just suggesting that you don't use a drop-in if it rains it gets under the plastic gets trapped and speeds up the rust process or so I'm told. But a spray in bedliner like Line-X would be amazing to prevent rust!

WooompWooomp. DD's what I'm looking for. Not sure I'm going to find one with less rust in upstate NY. Also, I need a car by the end of the May so I guess that leaves me a bit of time to find something better.

If the concensus was that at 9.5K this was a great deal, then I'd do it. The idea here is to drive it into the ground as DD unless gas prices go through the roof. My understanding is that there's at least 100K miles left in this car. Rust or no rust.

I'd offer him 8.75K and keep looking.

I painted everything before putting the liner back in so it shouldn't rust too bad. Eventually, I'll get around to cleaning up my welds and doing some form of spray liner.

after seeing the new pics IMo even 9.5k is a little high. I concur that the frame rust is minimal, but the body rust is a sucky thing to have to deal w/ and you're gonna want your DD to look sharp.

also the timing belt is a big deal, not debilitating to the engine if it fails (non interference motor) but a costly maintenance item that should have been done at 90k.

If he can prove the belt/pump have been done I'd bite at maybe 9k

honestly not a bad truck for the price (northern with 4wd cost more). DubCab is nice and at least it has power options.

not all DC were TRDs (03-04 when they were being phased out sure but not early) but most were at minimum SR5.

you could always extend your search a little further away and have someone drive you to get it, might even find a better price worth the trip.
