Stealership charged $1K for 150,000 mile service -- ripoff?

I brought my '06 DCSB TRB OR in for it's 150,000 service. The bill came to $1100. Basically they did all the same shit they do during any other multiple of 30,000 mile interval. Oil, filters, plugs, rotated tires, lubed U joints, flushed tranny and diff fluids, inspected a bunch of crap, etc, etc. How badly did I get bent over and given the shaft? I bought the truck used 40,000 miles ago, and this is the first time I've had it serviced since I bought it so I justified that I would put the money into the maint just to rest assured that it's all peachy.

For those of you who aren't grease monkeys, how do you get your trucks serviced in a way that's cheaper than the stealership? I don't have a reputable small mechanic shop in my area.

i don’t about where your are but around here they charge like $600. so yeah you got ripped of pretty bad. could also do it your self for close to 200 maybe 300 at the most if you already have the tools.

Are you mechanically inclined and have tools? There are Do it yourself threads all over this forum. These are not difficult tasks.

I'm tech savvy with bikes but that's about where it ends. I've never really gotten under the hood of a vehicle. Even if I had all the tools, I could see all this kind of stuff taking an entire weekend, which I don't have many of to spare.

ANy particular reason other than it not being necessary? Is it harmful to the tranny?

Are you sure they didn't change out the timing belt? It looks that way from the price.

I would have... my transmission got flushed at around 80k and probably will again around 160k.

Transmission flush is the only service I don't do myself due to some of the equipment that should be used.

I didnt see a tranny flush in the service manual for my '08. I hardly ever tow and don't have a LSD so the diff drain and flush really isn't on my radar and not required service.

The rest of the things you had them done you could have done for much less if you have the tools.

Trannys should be flushed regularly. I will never go more than 60k on mine.

Rear diff drain/fill takes all of 5 minutes. Not doing it because you "think" it's ok is not good. It really takes 5 minutes. Anyone not keeping up on their rear is asking for trouble. I do mine every 15k.

At around 90k I just recently:

    Replaced spark plugs
    Two valve cover gaskets
    Front Differential Fluid
    Transfer Case Fluid
    Rear Differential Fluid
    Spark Plugs
    Air Filter
    Cabin Air Filter
    Antifreeze Change
    Oil & Oil Filter Change

I estimate it cost me about $275 and it took me two days to complete. I used a torque wrench on EVERY fastener which may be why it takes me a little longer.

Without knowing exactly what they did it is very difficult to determine if you got screwed. Needless to say shop labor is at least $100/hr at a dealership plus the fact you bought it used and didn't know the service history I would say $1,100 is a fair price.

    stock, for now
You paid alot in labor. Dealership will ALWAYS be high on labor cost. Parts are marked up at those prices probably 100%.

Yeah, I was thinking I'll post up the itemized bill. I don't have it handy but will post it up this afternoon. I hate getting screwed by stealerships. Time to learn to turn wrenches myself.

I personally also have the additional satisfaction knowing everything was torqued to spec :p and I also know the individual responsible for the work had a great attention to detail and took care in worked performed (me :D)

Oh, and money saved. That's a good one too.
