Car Care Nut comments on dealership parts over charged over MSRP.
My recent visit to Toyota of Escondido charges over MSRP at the parts counter. Oil gasket was $1.60 not 1.16. Filter was $2 over MSRP and Transmission fluid was $2.5 per qt over MSRP.

WHAT A RIP OFF, IF ONLY THERE WERE SOMEWHERE ELSE THAT PERFORMED ROUTINE MAINTENANCE ON VEHICLES.

He must be really scraping the bottom of the barrel for video content. Next week he'll do a big investigation about lube techs underfilling the washer fluid reservoir by 2 inches

Had my dealership change out the front/rear diffs & transfer case to break the plugs loose for the first time. Between the 3 it takes about 6 qts. They charged me for 11. Asked the service manager about it and his reply.. "well, sometimes they take more." I use a reputable shop now.
Another time i went in there to get a price quote for getting the ecgs bushing installed. Between two different service advisors i got quotes that were $400 apart. WTF?

The entire west coast has had a firehose of money pointed at it for over a decade. The cost of everything out here has gone up along with the rent. They tear down an apt building where the units cost $970 a month and replace it with units that cost $2,200 a month. The tech kids don't care, they will happily pay over 3k a month, or go buy a 200k Sprinter without even blinking.

Meanwhile for the rest of the blue collar businesses, if you want your employees to be able to live within 2 hours of their job you have to pay them more. Prices have to go up to cover wage increases. Those MSRP prices are likely out of touch with local economics on the west coast

I've seen our hourly rate increase from $90 per hour in 2007 up to where it is now at $187.50. It will likely go up to $200 soon.

When i started here oil changes were $39.95, now the cheapest is about $115

People complain about our prices and I just laugh. They have no idea what it takes to keep a shop open in this area with over-head costs and property values. You can't even get people to show up for work at less than $20 per hour. Laziness has nothing to do with it. You simply can't afford rent and food below that

Discussing the reasons behind this would likely turn political but I can assure you no one at the dealer is driving home in a Ferrari because they charge 40 cents more for oil filters
