I do know some shady people up there in Rapid.... let me think... hmmm

Here's my idea, go out to B&B auto salvage (or maybe it's A&A... it's out there behind the mall) and see if you can find a Taurus of the same vintage and nab the steering column. the guy that runs the place is an incredible asshole, funny, but an asshole.. maybe if you tell him your story he might like it and cut you some slack.
Then you can mess around with the salvaged column and see what it will take to get it to turn.

i tried to google it for you. i did find how to make the ford tool to insert into the steering lock. as for the size of the cable it isnt to thick. it actualy loooks like the one hanging behind the purple and yellow wire. it has been ten years since i have been paid to steal cars(legaly) so i dont remember all the tricks of the trade. anyway if you get another chance at it follow down the column shifter and look around that area for a single black cable.

FWIW, THe ignition is held into the colum by a little pin that happens to be the same size as the roll pin on an AR-15 trigger gaurd. If you remove it, the ingnition assembly should fall right out. Then you will have a little rod that controls the steering lock. Pull it out, and throw it out the window. You should be able to start it, and drive away at this point. ......

After reading all of this, you should be able to make a key for the car. Ask a local locksmith about it. They insert a 'fake' key, it makes impressions on it then get the key cut... I had a key made for a 4wheeler and thats what they did because I lost the key...

Thanks a lot. What is this "ford tool"?

I knew you would have something to add to this. There is a little ball bearing looking thing that is on the bottom of the ignition... is that it? from what I found on google I think it said to remove the ignition push in on that and when you turn the key it'll push all the way in and the ignition will come out. Does this sound right?

My parents had one of these back in the day. No RFID key. Pretty easy engine to work on as well. Does it have to run?
