Hello everyone. After much searching, googling and all of that other fun stuff you kids do, I am looking for more insight.

I know that steel wheels and factory alloys don't use the same sensors, and the angle is different. I also know you can rotate them to allow the steel sensors to work in an oem alloy.

My question is: what aftermarket wheels have you all had success, or issues installing the steel wheels TPMS in? I understand that for the most part there shouldn't be an issue, just looking for specific examples from those that have tried it.

    Thanks!

    Dustin,

My SR5 was equipped with stock silver steelies.

The dealer sent it to a local custom shop to have new tires/ black alloy rims installed- apparently the quicksand color was not popular in my area and the truck was sitting on the lot for a few months. They thought the black alloy rims would make it look better.

I spoke to the custom shop guy when I purchased my full size spare, and he confirmed he used the steel rim TPMS's - just rotated them as you mentioned- 18 months later, no problems with the TPMS, fwiw.

Excellent, thank you. I worry about having them rotated for future tire work, due to the lack of caring by most tire shops, I'd hate to have one destroyed because they were in a hurry. I guess that's a last resort. If they don't work in their standard orientation I can flip them at the tire shop.

    Anyone else? Thanks!

I am about to go from OR alloy wheels to steel. If our respected sensors don't work we could trade

From my research, it looks like you can go from alloy to steel with no issues. The angle of the sensor on the steel wheels wont fit the barrel of the OE alloy wheels. You should be good to go my dude!

So i have an SR5 that came with steel wheels. I got a set of the SEMA TRD wheels and just flipped the sensors. They worked..ish. I dont have the annoying yellow light on, but i also have the " --" on all 4 tires. How am i able to fix this? If i get new sensors, which ones do i even get?

Do you have 4 or 5 sensors (one in the spare)?

Have you pushed the TPMS reset switch?

You can flip the sensors to get them in the alloys but they stick out a lot and if the tire guy doesn't know this when removing the tire there is a good chance he will break it. The best way is to deflate the tire and unscrew the sensor and let it fall into the tire. Break the bead and remove the tire and retrieve the sensor.

With them sticking up (like mine) they will not work correctly. I had Toyota re program mine and they worked until the first rotation. Not since. Only ----.

My new sensors will be here next week and I'm going back to Toyota to have them installed and programmed. It requires entering the sensor codes into techstream. Discount Tire can't do it.

I will do without before I pay someone to install and program sensors. I'll put a monkey face sticker over the light like the lady in the Quick Lube commercial on t.v. did. LOL!
