Yup to both more amps and slower line speed.

I chose the 12k Smittybilt, but it’s driven by a aux deep cycle Optima. The winch frame and weight is exactly the same as their 10k.

I like the lower gearing for the tough pull.

Line speed is less important to me vs grunt. Price difference was negligible when I was shopping around.

 

From this it looks like the 10k draws 270A at 6k# and the 12k draws 218A at 6k#.

Am I reading this right?

 

You’re right! I guess I was looking at the initial/light load amp draw.

There’s is a nice graph somewhere that’s shows load vs amp draw that mimics the stated draw vs load in my screen shot.

I theorize that the motor is working less as the load increases because of the lower gearing. My theory. No data that I’ve seen or read that supports it.

And it's the same motor in both winches, just lower gearing to get the higher rating. I was wrong yet again.

 

Is there a difference in line thickness? The cable, according to the chart is 3/8 inch on both, what about synthetic line? @Redmann xrc has 10k line (replaced), @Subway4X4 do you remember rating on yours?

 

3/8" synthetic is rated around 20k#. Usually same line is used in 9-12k winches

Just out of curiosity I checked the specs between the Warn Zeon 10 and 12. The 12 has a lower gear and draws more amps at the same rated load, which leads me to believe it uses a different motor than the 10.
