It adds up quick! If you're building a one-hander then you can just choose really any 7 weight (for steel) and buy a quality Skagit line. Get a different spool with a floating line and then you can choose between Skagit or traditional fly fishing with 1 rod

Yeah it does add up quick lol  but I hope to "use it for multiple things and multiple years" lol!
I have a nice Allen Kraken XLA reel, but keeping that for my Pyramid set up.

    Right now I'm planning:
10ft 7wt ; Gloomix imx pro , echo 3 or redingto vice. (pretty much from expensive to low, not sure which one yet)
Lamson Guru 2 HD: USA made, and full enclosed reel (prevent line from slipping through that crack) Getting good deal on it.
    OPST 275 Grain Skagit
OPST lazar (was thinking maybe that Stren catfish 40# line)
    OPST 96 Grain Sink Tips.

I've been contemplating getting a a 7wt switch rod for steelies. Maybe even a 3wt switch for trout too.

Redington is the best bang for your buck! I virtually only use their fly rods. Can't deny how well G. Loomis performs, but I can never justify the price. I have 1 G. Loomis spinning rod and love it, but dang do my $80 Lamiglass boat poles catch fish all the same.
