You are mostly correct except for the direction. The o-rings should not be a circle inside of a circle when you put them in. You want to unwind the o-ring and have it run along the axis of the shaft. I tried running them around the circumference, but they just would spit out. As far as which side, it doesn't matter. The o-ring will hang out on both ends. Put them in whatever end is easiest for you. Other than that, you have it right.

dalsmthme, did you have a rattling type noise under your feet, in the engine bay??? I have tightened up my suspension components, and I'm thinking that the rattling noise that I feel is the steering shaft rattling and make a noise in the engine bay.

You can feel the rattle in the steering wheel. You can hear it come from the fire all area. I never really felt it in the floor...

Ok, this explains the sloppiness and clunking I had last week when I took mine offroad a couple of weeks ago and the loosness I feel at highway speeds. That makes 3 things they will fix next week at the dealer. The ECM flash for the trans and the leaf tsb.

i took a differet route as i dont have a way of getting those o rings in lol. do the o rings end up inside or out side the factory rubber gasket?

now for explaiing what i did..thats a different thing, i just put a pull tie arund the shaft comming from the engine bay and around one of the "bolts" extending from the dampening mechanism. and pulled tight. bascially it make the moving go completly to one range. mre then likely not as good as dalsmthme but i'm going to see how it pans out. went for a test run and it make 80 percent difference so far

Are you guys hearing any noise coming from the engine bay area when you hit bumps? I'm trying to figure out if the noise and rattling I've been hearing is the steering column moving around or some other suspension related problem I have yet to find.

mine does it too. on a long list of things i'd like to have fixed by Toyota. The two other major things are the creep while stopped issue where the transmission shifts or torque converter kicks in while stopped at a stop light and overcomes the amount of brake pressure that was previously adequate to stay stopped and the rig starts to creep forward. The other is the ABS brakes that activate so easily that while stopping quickly from about 15-20mph and hit some pot holes or bumps, and you can't stop the rig.

When I was visiting my parents for easter, I took the opportunity to check my Father's '07 that does not exhibit the rattle. I found that his rag joint has the same motion mine does, the only difference is there is a LOT of grease packed down inside the joint. Mine was almost dry. Someone with a needle attachemnt for a grease gun could try filling the joint and see if it works.

my truck does this on washboard dirt, or cobble stone roads....it's fine on regular pavement! Ahhhh! So the three fixes s far:

    insert rubber
    zip tie
    grease..

anyone have luck making the dealer fix it?

I originally brought it up with the dealer. They wouldn't work on it because another truck off the lot did the same thing. I don't think it would matter since it appears to be a design issue. They are just going to tear out your steering column and put in one that is just as bad. That is at least until a new design is available.
