Steering extension

Has anyone extended their steering rods with just a 3" lift? I have the 886's with the larger top plate spacer and my steering boot slides up every time I turn.



Not sure what to do here. Ive changed out the clip on the end and still slips up. Anyone have any ideas on how to fix this?

As long as it is keeping the dust and dirt out, you shouldn't have any issues with it. Making those tie rods longer would be a daunting task, and I would highly suggest against it due to the additional stress already on the tie rods from a lift.

 

I've tried the hose clamp and the first time I turned it made a loud pop and went back to that same spot.

 

So extending it would be worse? I figured if I could extend it an inch it would have less stress on it.

 

Extending the TRE's is not necessary with the only a 3" lift.
The steering still only has a certain travel, the joints on the inner and outer are designed to use the full range of travel that the IFS has.

Like said above, if its not letting crud in don't worry about it.

 

I say total I probably have closer to 3.75 inches of lift. I just don't want it to snap on me from too much stress.

 

I'd let the boot have some movement... might rip otherwise.

Haha there not TOO bad but I've already had one rip but since I put the bumper on it has slightly come down.

 

Any time you make something longer, you increase the chance of it bending from stress. I still say as long as the boot is keeping out the dust (Which is what that boot is supposed to do) Then you are fine.
