My steering is a little loose

A little play, about in inch in the steering wheel, side to side

Also, it seems slightly tighter when I turn

It has always driven very straight

Any ideas as to what is going on?

    Thanks in advance

Hello Sarah, what truck do you have? 5 or 6 lug?

    Inner tie rod ends
    Outter tie rod ends
    steering rack bushings
    steering rack
    rack guide
    upper ball joints
    lower ball joints
    Wheel bearings
    intermediate steering shaft joint slop
intermediate steering shaft slip joint slop

It really could be a lot of things. That will get you started.

If I were to guess I would say the weak point is the Steering Intermediate Shaft Assembly universal joint. It is exposed to the harsh elements under the truck and tends to get worn out and rusty. This could cause slop and tight spots when turning.

I’m not sure how many lugs, I’ll have a look

And thank you both for your replies

I’m going to get new studded winter tires on and maybe they can let me know if anything is out of sorts

Thank you very much for your replies :)

It was the steering intermediate shaft assembly
Got it replaced and it’s great now

Glad you got it figured, its a commonish problem especially for trucks in wet/cold/salt environments.
