    From my paperwork:

Found the cause of the noise to be coming from the steering rack. Found that the mounts were extremely worn and there was noise coming from the gear as well. Also found tie rod ends loose.
    Installed: Tie Rod End
    Installed: Reman Rack Pinion
    Installed: Brake Fluid
Replaced Steering Rack and Tie Rod Ends.
    Alignment completed.

Truck rides and turns smoothly now.

Your truck is an 05? Did you just buy it? I'm curious how you got the dealer to pay for it.

Probably a bad CV joint on the front. Doesn't have to be in 4wd -- they turn with the wheels.

bump for anyone else who has gone through this and learned the fix

currently experiencing an intermittent but frequent pop/knock from what appears to be the steering. Happens when turning and over bumps

Already replaced so much trying to resolve it:
    -LCA's
    -UCA's
    -rack bushings (poly)
    -inner tie rods
    -outer tie rods
    -deleted swaybar/endlinks
    -spindles
-shocks (6112, clip 4 both sides)
    -KYB strut top hats
    -LCA mounting tabs are upgraded

They say to grease the steering stops, and I will, but I don't think that has much to do with it given they're there for full lock.

Seems like the only thing left that can be bad is the rack (which is currently slowly leaking black fluid from the boots), and column system parts connecting to the steering wheel

Are the LCA cams torqued to 100 lb/ft?

It's easy to come up short if your just tightening by hand with a big wrench

Have you checked your 4wd system? Axles, front driveshaft, bushings

    1.probably not
    2.exactly what I did
Thank you, I'll check. Hopefully it's still where I left it doing the alignment.
I'll check the repair manual to verify torque spec. That sounds pretty high given that lug bolts are 86-87 ft lbs.
Just going off experience aligning passenger cars that don't get 100 ft lb
Don't know if that would cause a noise (may perhaps lose/move alignment) but I know I definitely didn't tighten them to 100 ft lb

Think I found it though. Steering rack bolts were not fully torqued. After tightening them some, pop noise has decreased or gone away

Came 6mo if not more after installing poly rack bushings. They probably had some give/settled and shrunk down over time losing tension on the bolt.Or are harder to squish and get tight vs OEM rubber

Not sure how any of that would be a problem.
CV boots are intact, bushings are new. Not sure what would wear on the front propshaft; that likely does not spin in 2HI. Greased the slipyoke fitting wherever that is, under a year ago.

Pop was at low speed steering, not high speed constant rotational.

Hey brother sorry to revive an old thread wondering if you ever sorted this out the second time? Couple months ago my steering got really loose started making a pop and my mechanic replaced the rack and pinion along with the bushings. Got my truck back and made zero difference in the steering. I had to keep driving for work and eventually I got used to it or it started to feel a little bit Better. Recently I started that again that you're talking about even after the rack was replaced I'm thinking it might lower control my ball joint and I have the parts ready to go in I'm Just trying to get some insight before I dig too deep
