Hey all, I’ve got a 2018 Tacoma that’s lifted approximately 2.75 inches with 285/70R17 tires. The truck has just under 22,000KMs (Roughly 13,700 miles). I recently noticed that the drivers side steering rack boot looked wet. I took the truck into the dealer who confirmed that the steering rack was leaking and denied warrantying the part due to the lift and want $2400 CAD ($1700USD) to replace the rack.

How common is this with lifted Tacomas? This is my first lifted vehicle so maybe this kind of stuff just comes with the territory. Do you think this was a one off occurrence or could I potentially end up going through steering racks every few years?

    Picture of my truck below!

    Thanks all!

I would say it had more to do with the tires than the lift.

Yeah that's very possible, I thought 33 inch tires were a safe bet and 35 inch tires are where issues start occurring.

I think I seen a thread around here that there was a post with a rash of newer Tacomas with leaky racks that were stock and or lifted. The OP had the dealer replace it even tho he had a lift (US dealer). I think it’s BS that they are denying you a warranty claim due to the lift. However, it’s one of those risks you take I suppose with a lift.

I've replaced racks on 2 year old tacomas, they all fail sooner or later.

I'd try a different dealer if I were you. What region are you in? I see water so I cant help you.

I can't recall any steering racks going bad on here because of lift, probably just plain bad part to begin with. Denying warranty service because of aftermarket parts is nothing new. I'd try a different dealer or raise hell with the service writer/manager.

Yeah for sure, the dealer that denied the warranty also sells brand new Tacomas with lifts and 285 tires so it is kind of frustrating.

    No spacer, bilstein 5100's.

Interesting, seems like the steering racks are the weak links and adding bigger tires probably doesn't help. I'm in British Columbia Canada. I've rarely had a good experience with the service department at my local dealer.

Typical stealership. My local one is the same way. You'll have to bug them and fight them to get it fixed.

What's the retail price on these racks anyway? I'll bet you could find an independent shop to swap it much cheaper.

Dealer quoted me $1129 CAD ($829 USD) for the part alone. Independent shop may be the way to go.

I actually looked into that to see if I could upgrade to a bigger/stronger rack but it doesn't look like it is a direct bolt on and requires fabrication and notching the frame.

This - get a reman and a six-pack. It's an easy driveway job with minimal tools required.

Yep it's easy but it should be said that you should take tie down ratchet or cam lock straps and keep the steering wheel centered . If the wheel turns past its normal operation it will ruin the clock spring behind the wheel and throw a airbag (srs) code that can't be cleared and will need a replacement clock spring .
