    Hello all,
I've been a long time looker on this forum, and this is my first post. My truck has about 109,500 miles on it (it has had quite a life already), so that means its time for new bushings on the steering rack. I know energy suspension will not come through with replacement bushings before I go mad from the unresponsive steering.

My question to the forum is: Has anybody replaced the rack with a refurbished unit? My local shop quoted me almost $1100 for parts and labor to replace the rack and it is my understanding that the dealership is the same or more. I know that I can get a refurbished unit at about $75.00 net cost (with core). I am just concerned about the quality of the refurbished units.

Also, do you think that me purchasing the part and paying for labor only would be more cost efficient?

    Thanks!

I've used a lot of rebuilt parts with very few problems. A quality rebuild part has all the wear and or damaged parts replaced and come with a good warranty.

Depending on the shop labor rates might be higher for brought in parts and if you get the wrong part, don't get additional hardware or parts needed to correctly install the item, it is defective, your not going to be happy with the outcome. Most shops will warrant parts and labor for a period of time.

I would do a little research on area repair shops and get some prices to compare.

    Jim

When I had to replace the rack and pinion on my civic, it costed around $700 with a rebuilt one. I believe every repair/replacement use rebuilt ones as a brand new one cost way too much. I had no problem with mine.

If you have go to an autozone or local parts store they sell refurbished ones for 80-120 bucks with warranty and install it your self or get couple buddies to help yeah out. 1000 bucks little steep

I think mine is starting to go as well. I cant find a leak yet but I did have to add some fluid and I noticed that it was whining a little taking normal turns.

I know this thread is a few months old, but Moog makes replacement bushings for the steering rack. Perhaps this will help someone in the future.
