Steering Shaking 45-55mph

    3” lift, 33x12.50x20R wheels/tires
    just bought 2017 TRD double cab. I’ve got shaking in the steering wheel around 45-55mph. it’s got 33x12.50Rx20LT mudhog tires/wheels.
    what’s wierd is the truck drives and stops strait wether i’m driving 45
    or 80mph. please help with any suggestions. I feel i’ve gotten taken on the sale, please tell me there’s a way to fix this

    Sounds like a tire is out of balance. Move a front to the rear and see if it gets better. If not, swap the other side. Then you know (hopefully) which one it is, if not both. Then go to tire shop and have them re-balanced with road force balancing.

    Welcome to TW. Assuming you didn't notice the shake during your test drive? Did you get a 30 day warranty or did you buy it "as-is"? Sounds like the tires just need to be balanced. If you don't want to take it back to where you bought it from, go to a tire shop and have them balanced. Call before you go to make sure their machine can handle your size wheels/tires - some shops can't handle over-sized.

    Cut & broke off stuff. Prolific ziptie and tape usage.
    Yes, likely tire balance. Can be tricky on Tacoma and 4runner to get just right for some reason. I had to try a few shops before they got my 4R tires done right to make the steering not shake at 55mph.

    Also, if truck is lifted more than 2 inch but still using factory upper control arms, steering can feel twitchy at speed.

    It is either balancing or just crap tires or lug centric wheels. My money would go with crap tires. Take it to a shop that can balance them and see how they roll. If they balance and are round (that is a very big if) then look to your wheels. If they are not hub centric, that is probably your source. Driving straight and stopping straight has nothing to do with your issue.

    Did you test drive the truck? It is hard to say if you were taken. Private party, no question the original owner knew. Car dealer, who knows? They can be idiots. Wherever you bought it from, take it back.

    thanks for the input. i’m going start with checking tire pressure again. if no success swap front to back. everyone has different opinions about psi. do you go max as indicated on the sidewall? it reads 65max. or any suggestion what’s best? mabe i need to play with it‍♂️

    Could be be just bad set of tires that will never balance...had the issue with my tundra with general at2 grabbers. Unloaded them for another brand, no more shaking at different speeds.

    My grabbers were the same way. First set did well... second set there's still one out of balance (60k later). It's bald so I don't care anymore and just put it in the back. ;)

    Agree, in my experience Toyota's are sensitive to tire balance. My 4Runner, FJ Cruiser, and Tacoma all suffer from a bit of steering wheel shake. Just my experience.

    Curious question..... Shouldn't this only matter for how the shop balances them?
    My stockers were hubcentric, but aftermarkets are lug centric (acorn lugs). There is an adapter for hubcentric balancing specific Toyota rims, but does matter as much for lug centric? We aren't the only brand with hub centric.
    Additional question - would centering rings improve on aftermarkets?

    Our trucks require* a PSI that attains a 2,149 lb load rating from P and euro metric tires.
    Or, a 1,954 lb load rating from LT tires.

    @41 psi a 33x12.5R20 has a load rating of 1,951 lbs.
