Steering wheel buttons

Kinda hard to explain. I apologize.

I bought a China clock spring and tested the wiring with a multimeter that it goes to the plug behind the radio, and it does. So, I ordered the left side 10 pin steering wheel buttons and I already have the adapter for the head unit when it arrives.

Just had a question about the right side with the Bluetooth buttons. The harness in the radio only has 3 wires. Will that work? Or does the full left and right buttons require a later year truck that had more than three wires to the controls? Because I'll buy the ribbon cable and the right side if you guys say that the 3 wires were the same and will work.

I would have to look but it is going to depend what you controls you got. 12-13 are different than 2014-2015. Diff between 12/13 and 14/15 is 1 or 2 wires. 1 controls left and right on the left side if I recall and the other is for lights (maybe a 3rd for ground). Are you converting to later model 2nd gen?

 

I'm not sure, I took the part number from a post that added steering wheel controls. I'm ebaying the parts, Toyota is rediculous with a 100 dollar ribbon cable and such. I'm pretty confident the left side will work (I'll know in a few days). But not 100% on if the right one will since it's only 3 wires that talk to the head unit, understand how the radio transfer of input data works. Why I'm hesitant to but it until I know if the 3 wire is standard or not.

Edit: Oh. And I'm just trying to add steering wheel buttons. My aftermarket head unit has teeny tiny touch buttons and it's annoying.

 

yah which controls are you adding? there are a few different versions but the later 2.5 gen uses the same clock spring but there is some wire differences between 12/13 and 14/15. You can find it in some thread of people swapping them and even some on-the-clock spring changes (may already be the ones you have) some of the notes though need some digging to find. If you have a photo of which wire it would help. I know from my setup that 12/13 to 14/15 i had to add a couple of wires to get full controls. I thin that extra wire for left and right was on the right side since it was for navigation of the UI and not volume and left/right tracks. You could prob get buy if your programmed the buttons anyway but it would be annoying to not be able to use part of the controls. I have aftermarket now that's been programmed so its def nice to be able to use all of them.

 

I got https://www.ebay.com/itm/231513078192 this for buttons, should be here on the 10th. I don't remember what clock spring I got but it's different and has a 10 pin. I haven't gotten a right side yet because I'm not sure if it'll work.

 

ahh ok that would the older ones I thought you were going for a newer version.

 

so the right side buttons if I were to get them will still work over the three wire connection out of the dash? (Uses 3 of several pins in the plug)

 

The right side connects to the left side with a ribbon cable.
