Steering Wheel Controls Don't Work?

    Hey guys, I'm new here.
    I just picked up an 05 Double Cab TRD Tacoma with the 6 speed trans from the dealership that I work at.
    I can't get the steering wheel controls to work. I searched about it and I can't find anything. What could be wrong?

    The original owner probably had an aftermarket radio in it, definitely pull the head unit and check connections. Also, check to make sure that it is the correct head unit and not just off the dealer old stock storage which may not have SW control capabilities.

    Thanks guys.
    Yeah, I bought it "as is" from them, and since I am an employee and got employee pricing it is on me to fix. Ill definitely pull the head unit and check connections. I found some RCA cables near the driver side rear seat so I am guessing that he might have had an aftermarket head unit, or had a line drop installed. So I'll check that out first off and see what the deal is.

    Spiral cable in the steering wheel. There was a recall for it. If you decide to look into it yourself be careful as it also goes to the air bag.

    I just recently put my stock radio back in. If the connector is missing i can send you a link to the harness I bought and how I wired it to work with the steering controls again.

    Thanks guys! So I pulled out the head unit last night to install a factory aux cable deal and thought I would check on the connections while I was at it.
    Well I found 3 wires for the stock harness that look like they got ripped out / unplugged. but there were no metal connections left in the holes like for the connecters? I took a picture so let me get that posted. Maybe he took them out to make the factory plugs work with an aftermarket head unit?
    What do you guys think?

    Could anyone maybe give me a wiring diagram for where the cables should go? I might call Toyota and see if they have any way of getting me some new connectors I could solder back on and fix the connections.

    Those 3 striped wires are the controls. You need the R3 connector. Have the dealership look it up.
    The wires goes in the R3 connector in this order
    Pin 6 white W/ red stripe
    Pin 7 purple W/ white stripe
    Pin 8 yellow W/ black stripe

    You will need the pins to put the stripped wires back in the R3 connector. I don't know the part numbers but I am sure they can be found on mouser.com maybe even these. http://www.mouser.com/Search/ProductDetail.aspx?R=1123343-1virtualkey57100000virtualkey571-1123343-1

    Oh awesome! Yeah it looked like I was completely missing the connector. I'll have to check it out at the dealer, or even see if I can get one through the dealership that I work at.

    Your welcome. The R3 connector looks like this. The PIN numbers is flipped. If you where looking at the connect as if you where about to put the wires in it would read
    10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1
    20 ....................11
    You get the idea.?..

    Oh yeah I see what you're saying. So in the diagram it is showing the numbers as if you were looking at the front of the connector with the wires going out the back. Correct?
    So I need to wire it as if it was like you said.

    Correct. Just replaced my 07 HU with a 2013 touchscreen. Those 3 wires I had to relocate to the new connector (r15)

    also added a scion IQ mic for the Bluetooth.
    Just finished it yesterday. It was fresh in my mind.

    Oh that's awesome, such a good deal! That's what I need to find. That would be really nice. You just had to get a harness for it all to hook up right? Or is the factory harness made to work with the touch screen head unit also?
