Hey! I'm here from the 4runner forums and wondering how similar this would be on my 4runner. I have a 1998 but am using a clockspring and steering wheel/airbag from a 1997 one. I don't plan on adding the bluetooth controls so it should be easier.

The stalks for the lights and wipers can be removed separately so I believe this would allow me to use the new cancel cam.

From what I've been reading the best option for me would be using a GS Clockspring and an 01-04 GS wheel. My question is if that steering wheel is required or if I can use one from say a tundra or sequoia along with the single connector airbag from the 03-04 tundra/sequoia.

ideally I would like a four spoke wheel though so I'd rather do that instead of the GS.

I should have the same cruise control switch and stuff that the tacoma does (or at least to my understanding)

Sorry if this is out of place, nobody over on my forums have done this swap and I'd like to (at least try) to be the first.

    Thanks!

So your wanting to just change steering wheel and air bag to a 01-04 GS wheel? I'd have to see the back of the wheel and what your column looks like under your steering wheel. Is the GS airbag a single connection or a 2 plug connection?

Thanks for the quick response! I was thinking about the GS because based off the post on the first page it seems easier, however I'd prefer to have the four spoke wheel from the tundra or sequoia. Either way I would like to have radio controls though.
My 4runner is a single plug so I know the 03/04 tundra/sequoia airbags would work, however I'm just trying to find out how similar it truly is to the tacoma so I can do the swap.

    Post in question:

If possible though I'd rather do the tundra wheel over the lexus one

This is what the steering column looks like
    https://www.ebay.com/itm/134350275542

I assumed this swap into the 4runner should be relatively similar as the tacoma uses the same airbag and clockspring that mine does

the clockspring uses a four pin like the tacoma: https://www.ebay.com/itm/153377541234

4 runner is the same as the Tacoma in that year. I need to see a complete column from the top after the steering wheel and outer cover is off. With the turnsignal switch and wiper switch. You always swap the airbag charges over (1 vs 2 plug connection ) to another airbage.

does this work? the weather is pretty bad where I'm at right now so I can't take it off at the moment. I have this picture from when I was putting the wheel on
    2f8666f0559c10850d2c0b285a46c245_021b050a90c2fdb65b83b9c33d85f6ff47515412.jpg

I know that the light stalk and wiper stalk come off independently

this picture is from another swap (hence the clock spring being different)

That column will accept the later model 6 wire clock spring.

all good, glad to hear it! I'm planning on getting most of the parts tomorrow from a parts vehicle locally so I'll have to see what I get but I'm sure I'll have more questions

    Thanks for all your help!

I've managed to get everything but the airbag now, so I've started writing down everything that I need to do. My 4runner uses three wires for the cruise control and I can see that I'll need to modify the switch and also add a wire to the plug. I noticed the wire colors are different other than the horn so I'd like to ask what wires I should use, diagram below, you can ignore the bottom part, the top four wires are my concern:

    298455d1527134608-steering-wheel-swap-le_a0e2ce41a08cb17e0aeddfd2cf8dbf4dae7e8a40.jpg

So from what I understand the black/yellow from the 12pin goes to my green/red, like in your diagram, but the other ones are just labeled "cruise control" so I'm not sure where the wires on mine will go as they're different colors.

I'm still also slightly confused on how I connect everything with the CC.

I've read before that my cruise control switch is reliant on resistors to work and I'm not 100% sure if that'd work here
    Resistors:

It's been discovered that the resistors have to be changed in most of the cruise control switches. I've only found one that worked without changing them and it was given to me. Unknown what veh it cam from. I can change them for you or get you the info yo do yourself.

Yeah that's what I was thinking, so the red wire splice won't work for me then I'm guessing
I guess I could reuse the old switch and use the existing wires then just add another wire on the other side accordingly

I might be able to add the resistors myself, could I add them inline with the new CC switch wire or would I have to add some kind of terminal for them?

Edit: The easiest approach seems to be wiring in a switch from a 98+ or 92-98 camry as they're the same and are not at an angle like the 96 switch I'm using is

Yes you need a newer type cc switch.

Following this to do a steering wheel swap in my '97. I've found a perfect wheel from a 2005 Tundra with a two-wire airbag. Has anybody successfully swapped igniters/charges? Read conflicting reports, just curious. One wire Tundra/Sequoia airbags appear to be rare as hen's teeth.

This is what I'm planning on doing in my 4Runner. I have the single stage charge, just need to grab myself a dual stage airbag and I suppose we'll find out
