This is how its happened to me many times. No matter how careful you are, it only takes one time to make the mark.

Its leather, think skin it dries out , some cleaners are harmful. Up here in the north land -20 to -30 below can have that effect.. I have had only one car with leather and prefer cloth with a seat cover. That said everyone has a preference.

I agree with everyone else saying knife clip.

The shop I work in has a strict "no-knife clips on outside of pocket" policy after having to pay $700 for a leather steering wheel we
scratched. I'm a knife nut, and run the shop, and won't clip it to the outside. It's too much of a risk to paint and interior of customer
vehicles. On your own vehicle, go for it!

Sam happened to me. At first I thought the shop that installed remote start and tinted windows did it. Then I got in my truck with pair of pants I often wear to the range, with my knife in leg pocket, and realized it's me that did it, and how easily it scratches.

I do too. That’s why when I kept to trying to figure out how to make my knife touch, I never could. My right knee gets close to the wheel, but never my right hip.
I’m fact, the more I tried it then more I was convinced it wasn’t my knife. Also, I’ve never, not even once in my life, left my steering wheel in that position when I parked.

It can also happen from jeans rivets, but usually with truck owners it's a pocket knife.

Your explanation makes much more sense to me than a knife clip.

I have had it happen with cargo shorts / pants, carrying knife in thigh pocket. Prevention, maybe a piece of aquarium tubing over the clip?

Gave up the knife for this exact reason. Leather seats. Just keep a knife in the truck!

Pretty sure @Bertw192 hit the nail on the head. The only thing all of us, who have that mark on the steering wheel, have in common is that we carry pocket knives.

I hear you man, I just know I don't enter my truck that way and I don't leave my steering wheel turned that way. I really think it's scrapping my gym bag across the wheel. It's not my knife.

Do you keep the truck locked? The damage looks consistent with marks that a younger bigfoot might make. Some would expect more destruction, but an inquisitive bigfoot could well mark a steering wheel up like that it if it was just rummaging around.

I put a neoprene cover (Walmart) on my wheel right when i bought it. Helps with extreme hot/cold and other damage. Try it out, you may like it.
