Bingo. It’s this. Had this happen on the last 3 cars I’ve owned. I have some meaty zippers on some of my coats and the steering wheel is sadly the victim of it.

something was definately dragged accross the leather. And, it didn't get worse, the loose edges where it was torn or cut simply dried out as they were exposed to the open air. Apply a small amount of leather conditioner and work it in. It'll help a little. Look on the bright side, your steering wheel has character now! ;)

The 4Runners have major issues with the leather “peeling”, but it looks nothing like this. That is 100% damaged by something. My wife’s 4Runner is peeling and almost every used 4Runner at our dealership show the same type of peeling. None of the Tacomas I’ve seen have this problem. The steering wheels must be made in different places.

You have the same little white dots all over your wheel that I have - like the black dye for the leather is not holding up.

Clip on my pocket knife, when it's in my pocket, made that exact same damage on mine. Do you carry a pocket knife a lot?

Did you get this cover From Wheelskins?
Did you put it right over the OEM cover?
