I have a 2015 with 56k miles and I'm getting steering wheel shake at 50-60mph and can't figure this out.

I recently swapped wheels to SCS Ray 10, but kept the same tires KO2's (285/65/16) with maybe 15k miles on them. I did not have this issue before the new wheels

They (Discount) balanced the wheels upon installation, and I just took it back in to have them re-balanced twice in the last week and still have the same issue. They are using a road force balancer.

They told me these wheels are difficult to balance because they have to start from the inside and move towards the outside and that I may still feel some light vibration. (Whatever that means!)

Any thoughts on my next move? Go to another location? Look at something else? Thanks

Make sure the lug nuts are torqued to 85lbs
More or less will also be a cause of this issue.

Try to stay away from the chain stores to get an alignment. I would go to your typical mom and pop store/garage much better quality service.

I would hope this is not the issue, as I’ve had them remove and balance 3 times now.

This is my next thought. But should it really be this difficult to balance some SCS wheels?

If it wasn’t there prior to the new wheels, it’s a tire wheel issue. Have them rotate the tires 180 on the wheel, rebalance and test drive. Just because they’ve done three times doesn’t mean it’s correct. How much weight is on the fronts to get them to balance?

I'm not positive how many weights they have one there. I do know I had them rotate the tires on the balance prior to the last one.

Ok, so ask them to dismount the tires and turn them 180 and remount and balance? I would take them somewhere other then Discount I just don't know of any pros around here.

Yeah I second this. I do like discount tire, but they F'd my balancing up three times in a row. Tried to say the weights came off during travel.

Yes. Have them do one tire/wheel at a time. I used to work for DT and I was the trouble tire/wheel combo guy. Whenever I had an issue like yours first thing I’d do is 180 the combo and then even sometimes move them in 10-15 degree increments until I got the least amount of weight on them and they were balanced. The issue is more than likely there is a heavy spot in the combo matched up and no matter how much weight you put on and the machine says balanced. They spot at a certain speed will cause a vibration. Some places are/aren’t willing to putting in the time to balance truck tires correctly. Also sometimes you just get a crappy tire that no matter what you do just won’t balance and a good tech will replace it and start over. Good luck.

Because they have a Road Force machine doesn't mean the tech know's how to use it correctly. Or are willing to make the extra effort to do so.

Many shops around here will charge extra to do a full on Road Force balance. Because it does take more time.

I just checked the front wheels, looks like there's about 20 weights per wheel. Is that bad?

I'm still having the issue, I'm about to take it back and demand they rotate the tires 180 and re-balance. Anything else I should ask them?

Yes. Make sure they road force balance them and that they use the correct adapter. They need to use the Haweka adapter.

Ok thanks. Does 20+ weights seem a little high?

Yes. That's about 2x what I would want to see. Like others have said, it's likely a mismatch between the wheel and the tire positions. This is pretty common when putting old tires on new wheels. The tire wears in based on the original wheel and when you mount it on something new, it is hard to balance. I always tell people if you're going to change wheels, get new tires too and just sell off the old combo.

OP, a couple of years ago I tried putting some Raceline wheels on my VW Eos. They could't ever balance them correctly. I went back probably 7 times with no positive results. Discount even put new tires on thinking there may have been an issue with the tire. Tried hub centric rings which helped a bit but still not right. Finally, had to get new Enkei wheels which solved the problem. Discount tire was great and covered everything but in my case it was definitely the wheels. No way you should require that many weights on a wheel. Tons of folks on here have SCS wheels with no issues but you may have a wheel issue. Best of getting it figured out as I know how frustrating this is.

Just dropped it off. He agreed to rotate them 180 and re-balance. He said he’d also rotate the wheels and check for a bad tire.

He did ‘remind me’ that these wheels are not ideal for balancing because of the offset being so deep.

Also mentioned that if it’s still shaking after, it could be something else with the truck.
