Steering Wheel Shudder Between 30 and 40 mph (not tire balancing)

    had my tires balanced again today (8th time) and it didn't change anything. Still a shudder in the steering wheel between 30-40 mph. Took the truck back to the place where i got the wheels and tires to get my old stockers put back on and to raise hell if the shudder stopped when the stockers were put back on. Only thing is that the shudder is exactly the same as it was with the 32's on it so its something else within the truck. Taking it to a toyota specialist guy 2moro to see what he finds

    any ideas what else could cause this since its obviously not the tires/wheels...

    ya thats my thoughts as well, its a distinct shudder 30-40 mph. 2nd, 3rd, or 4th gear it will still do it. Accelerating, decelerating, or steady speed in that interval it will still do it with the gas pedal depressed or even if i'm going down a hill and just keep it in gear it will do it

    and its not his tires? i'm thinking mine is cv boots or steering bushings.

    I just did the tire rotation on my truck for the first time with my new tires and immediately noticed a shake between 40-50 mph. im taking it back to check the tires and maybe rebalance them. Also have them properly trqued.

    your tires probably need rebalanced. have seen a million posts on here from second gen guys saying they got a rotation and got vibes, its just from the uneven wear but i bet a balance will help things. With mine i put on a different set of wheels and tires and its still doing it in the same range as before, where as this same set of tires never had a single problem. so atleast now i know that my new ones are fine its something in my front end

    Its good that you were able to eliminate the new tire/wheel combo as the source of your vibs.

    Did you lift with 5100s in the front? How much higher are you from stock (not including what you gained from larger tires)?

    How did you lift the rear? Same question about amount of lift.

    no lift in rear, but the front billys are prob at about 2" higher now cuz i have had them for over a year and they've settled

    just got back from the redneck toyota shop in some guys backyard, and after bullshitting for about 2 hours and actually working for one we found the problem to most likely be the rear portion of the drive shaft. When we took the non workers safety approved method of having one of the guys in the truck up on the lift running the truck so the shaft would spin and me and another guy underneath of it, we could see the shaft oscillating a little. So pretty much just greased that portion and they said it hadn't been greased in a while and along with the cold it was leaving some room for the shaft to vibrate a little. So with warm weather this week and letting the grease soak in it should help it out, and just the greasing of it has made a little bit of a difference.

    Hey, good find. Yeah, gotta keep those u-joints and slip yoke greased up. Not just for vibes, the pieces will live longer too.
