The dreaded previous owner of my truck evidently was rough on the steps. They're the chrome tube bars with black plastic inserts... not sure of the brand. Anyway the drivers side front insert is coming off and I guess the mounting bits broke because the back end won't stay in/on the chrome tube. And the front holds it loosely so that the black insert piece can rotate relative to the chrome tube.

What would be a good glue to glue it back on?

A few additions to make me feel cool.
You might want to search craigslist for a new set.

IMG_0012.jpg Here's a pic with the insert rotated to show what I mean that it's partially connected. Sliders would be sweet, but not in the cards now. A craigslist set might be at some point, but I'd like to stabilize the insert until that time comes.

Remove it, clean the chrome tube and the plastic step, and 'glue' it back on with a bead of marine silicone.

    A good glue
Or rtv8 silicone will work fine.
But make sure to use some sort of even clamping pressure for good bond. And clean and scuff up the metal under the rubber with a light sandpaper for good adhesion.

I've got lots of those pistol grip clamps, so that should be very doable

Is marine silicone available outside marine/boat shops? Never looked for it before.

If all of that fails, try gorilla glue, just clamp it good, as the stuff foams up and expands.

A few OE parts from fancy trucks
Drill where the mounts have broken.

Mark the plastic and drill them in the same place.

Use a nice panhead SS self tapping screw.

No one will even notice, and they'll certainly stay in place.

Or just go ahead and get some real sliders :D

You should be able to find marine silicone at any auto parts store or Walmart...maybe even at a home improvement store.

I'd use some double sided 3M tape. (You know, the stuff used for your truck badges). You can get a roll at any autoparts store. That step won't move again.
