This morning as I was driving in to work, I was merging onto a busy access road and had to quickly get over two lanes, across a lot of traffic. I was alternating a lot between the brakes and the gas as I tried to maneuver my way into the small gaps between fast moving cars. At one point I stepped on the gas and nothing happened. It felt like the truck had stalled. That only lasted for a second and it seems to be fine now. I'm in a `21 2.7 DCSB, btw.

Has anyone else had something like this happen? Is this potentially pointing to an actual problem or is this just a symptom of the weird transmission hunting and the throttle control Toyota has programmed into the ECU? I'm hoping maybe it just got a little confused because I was alternating so frequently between braking and accelerating. Even if that is all it was it makes me a little nervous that one of these days I'm going to merge in front of an oncoming car and not actually be able to accelerate like I'm expecting to.

Normal characteristic of the auto transmission. My biggest complaint when I had my 18 auto . Hit the gas nada . Then it would launch you . Test drove a new one same shit . Purchased a manual don’t have that issue anymore . Might want to look into a ov tune .

Definitely considering a tune once I'm past the warranty. A tech advisor at our dealership told me that tuning would cause a lot of red flags when I bring it in for maintenance and they hook up the scanner. He did feel pretty sure that something like a pedal commander would not void the warranty.

Like gotsand said its a normal thing for the auto trannys, at least on the 3.5s. I agree it could be dangerous at the wrong time. We will have to be careful who reads this thread, stating these things really upsets some folks around here.

Aftermarket tunes can fix it, but I’m not sure the availability on the 2.7.

The tune is undetectable to the tech with the dealer scanner.

Some people here have said that. The dealer tech said otherwise. Not sure who to believe, but I definitely don't want to risk voiding my warranty.

I understand the apprehension. All I can say is I am much happier with my truck after tuning. I’ve been tuned for close to 12,000 miles now with no issues.

Check out K&N... they did a throttle tuner as well. I have had both the Pedal Commander and the K&N, the K&N is much better product.

    Really?????

Did any of you test drive the dang thing???? The Tacoma is a low HP low torque under powered dog of a truck. This is nothing new. No big surprise here.

Fuel pump issue maybe? Are the 2021s under the recall too?

If there’s a 2.7L tune out there, let me know. Can’t find one anywhere.

It happens to me every morning in my 2021 2.7L going to work. At a certain right turn at the bottom of the hill, it gives a rev when I gas since I’m already going about 5 mph but acts like I’m idling. Then kicks in when I’m around the corner.

Hooking up techstream by toyota tech is a billable event somewhere between $75-$120 and you need to sign to agree.
The tech only will see miles driven since DTC reset, which also caused by unplugging the battery. The rest is identical.

The 2.7 doesnt go anywhere if you mash the pedal without ECT on....you gotta give it a few seconds to unleash the beast. You’re almost better easing into it, then stomping on it without that ECT on. I don’t mind it to be honest, has sorta made me a more responsible driver lol

The problem is not really the lack of torque. Before I tuned if I was on my driveway and feathered the throttle there was little to no reaction in the engine to my foot. The Toyota TSBs "slightly improved" the throttle reaction to the pedal but only marginally. With tuning (first with the base OVT 2.0, then custom OVT 2.0 tunes, and now KDMax 6.0 releases) all other improvements/tweaks the tunes resolve the pedal delay and "oh $%#$ moments". That said, tuning does put you in the right gear and also provide more throttle possible for any given pedal position/speed. If you have never driven a tuned truck you are missing out. Even though it's not a race truck it sure is nice it can really move if you want it to.

Disclaimer 1: I bought a nicely used '16 once OVT was rolling out knowing it would be a step in the right direction
Disclaimer 2: KDMAX 6.0 build from OVT 2.0 base is to date the best tune for your investment. Pick it up or get help locally here

Are you driving a V6 or 4 cyl?

In spite of the 2.7's reputation for sluggishness, even with a DCSB it's no slouch when I get the RPMs up there (with the help of ECT PWR). I'm not going to win any drag races, but it does make me think that a tune would make it potentially good enough for me.

Yes, I have the V6 so it was not really a fair reply. We had heard about potential future 2.7 access but I have not seen it yet. I'll take a few steps more and look around as that is what you would really benefit from. I'll post back if I get some good details!

Thanks. Ovtune's site says it's currently only for the 2016-2017 2.7s, alas. Maybe you'll find something else.

Usually see this meme on these types of threads. I was driving a mazda suv and had this same occurrence. Never happen in the 11 V6 TRD Sport

somerhing similar happened to me on a ‘17 TRD Sport. On a busy cross street in downtown Los Angeles of all places.
I did send an email to Corp. never got a replied. and is not like some people say that we should know that the truck is under powered. One thing is underpowered and another leaving you behind the wheel with absolutely no control. I’ve had my share of underpowered vehicles. And when you know. You drive accordingly. Like not try not merge into a line like your driving a sports car. That is one thing. But the truck has the power. It just gets confused between trying to use the real engine power and the gas saving engine.
and laugh if you want. But now I have a ‘21 TRD OR. I love the thing. But I never forget that the pedal has to be treated with fínese.
Eventually some one will get hurt. And that is when they’ll fix it.
