Love this truck.

 

$3500 to repair?!!

That auto shop offered you such a shitty number to repair because he wants the truck.

$600 for a factory bedside panel.

They are easy to replace when you pull the box off the truck. Seeing post like that pisses me off.

Beds come off real easy. 4 guys can easily lift and set on a set of saw horses. 2 guys if young and strong. 1 guy if you have a set of chainfalls.

 

Or replace with a regular bed for $500-1500.

Vdonalds - Yeah, I have to say that $3500 to fix sounded very high to me as well. I figure he saw an opportunity to get a great truck at a seriously low price. In August, i bought my 2001 xtracap stepside prerunner (trd offroad and sr5 packages) with 110,000 miles on it for $8,000. Well under blue book value. I would imagine your truck repaired would be worth over 10,000.

I'm having trouble even finding a fleetside bed around here under $ 1,500 and then having to paint it.

 

Did you try car-part.com?

 

If only there was some way for me to switch my regular bed with one of these...

I totally agree, Love the look of the truck other than that cap. Wondering if thats one that ARE made for that or if its off another model stepside?

 

i ask purely out of curiosity: what's the appeal of the stepside vs traditional bed?

 

I think it's more of an aesthetics thing. I had one for a few years, and it definitely looked pretty cool (I thought) especially with a small lift and tires, but it was difficult sometimes when I needed to actually use the bed. Putting skis and MTB's in the bed put a decent amount of scratches on the sides since it is sort of more exposed on tops of those rear fender areas. I ended up selling it to buy a 4Runner, then wound up also getting a fleet side 1st gen Tacoma. I immediately liked the fleet side better. The extra bed room has been more useful for me. Really depends on intended use IMO.

 

That's kind of my question. it seems like you lose a lot of functionality with the smaller bed. is there some other benefit - mileage? aerodynamics? off-road performance? or is it just aesthetics?

 

Perhaps someone can correct me if I'm wrong but it seems like it's just for looks. In myself never even used the steps on the sides. I just used the tires to step on

When I bought my truck new in October of '03, there were 2 trucks remaining on the lot, both step sides, one Lunar Mist, the other black. I didn't know that step sides existed in Tacoma form. It grew on me and I wouldn't change.

Here's mine. Needs some new suspension but other than that it's still running strong.
