New StepSide Tacoma owner with 130k miles! I noticed the StepSide is pretty rare and I really don't want to do the fleet cab swap to get more options. Anyone selling a soft-topper, aluminum/fiberglass camper topper since they're long discontinued (correct me if I'm wrong)? In California and would love to keep it mostly stock with the exception of restomods and take it on adventures with my other half.

I was in the same situation years ago… Wanted a topper but couldn’t find a thing.. Ended up buying a used SoftTopper on CL… Best investment I’ve made for the truck.. very versatile and lightweight… and it looks good

They fit several models.. old Ford Ranger step sides.. GMC ss etc… so don’t just limit yourself looking at Tacoma’s.. also easy to pack and ship so check allofcraiglist nationwide… I’ll see if I can find the Model # if you’re interested

it did take some time to find a used one… if you don’t have the time you can still buy new from their site..

    good luck

If money and wait time aren't concerns, I think Softopper can make a new topper for any size bed. Their system is very flexible. You could probably get an aluminum contractor-style shell (ARE DCU or similar) custom-made as well. Last I checked a new Softopper is $800 and a DCU is $2000+, probably with a few months' lead time.

    If you want used stuff...

I've got a white Softopper that I think will fit a Stepside Tacoma. I bought it used last year, didn't check the width, and didn't realize it was wrong for my truck until I got it home. The main shell and front panel are in good condition. The rear panel needs repair--the plastic window is torn and there's a hole in the canvas that needs patching. Softopper no longer sells toppers or replacement panels in white, so the repairs will need to be done by an auto upholstery shop.

Here's what it looked like mid-cleanup. The cleanup was just a blue-dawn-and-sponge job, so I think it can get cleaner still with a pressure washer.

Shoot me a DM if you're interested. We can double-check the dimensions to make sure it will actually fit your bed. I'm in Colorado but shipping should be reasonable.

I'd appreciate the model number! It fits like a glove? Yeah, I'm always on the constant look out but no rush. I drove my Nissan Frontier from California to Texas for a steal of a deal camper shell. Thanks so much for the input.

Thanks for the info! I sent an inquiry to Softopper since their website supports fleet cabs only but couldn't hurt to ask. I'll check with ARE on their options but it seems like I'll have to contact directly to inform them it's a stepside.

In regards to your white Softopper, I'll let you know if I decide to pull the trigger. I am curious about the size. I'd love to have one ready to go without sending it out for reupholster and redone.

Appreciate the responses! For now I'll scope out the B/S/T and stay active to enjoy this adventure with everyone.

For whatever it's worth... a Softopper can be used without the back window. Obviously it means less protection, but you could still get some coverage while waiting on the upholsterer, and you might even get the panel back from the upholsterer sooner than you could get a topper elsewhere.

No rush on my part, though. I don't have the Softopper listed anywhere else, so it's not likely to disappear while you're looking around.

Ok found it... Model #MS72... It fits great.. nice and tight.. there's multiple little adjustment points to really dial it in... I seem sealed mine and have slept many a comfy night back there in my cot... You can check my build page to see what it looks like on a step side from different angles... I've had mine for years from deserts to snow storms... I love mine but there are some negatives like visibility when the sides are down.. security... dust penetration.. and rain will drip in the corners.. ive found pretty good solutions for all that though... . if you have any more questions just ask

    Hope this helps...

I got a red Tonneau cover that I don't use. They are very rare so I may let it go for the right price. Shipping may be pricey.

Looks good... They only made the stepside for a few years and all are 6 ft beds... If it fits a stepside tacoma youll be fine

I have a silver hard tonneau cover for a 1st gen stepside available in Utah if anyone wants to come get it. I switched to a shell and don't need the hard tonneau anymore.

Edit: this cover is no longer available.

I've got a neighbor who has one collecting dust. I've asked him more than once if he's like to sell it. Maybe once more and I'll get lucky.
