If I were to install aftermarket speakers, isdthe stock head unit in a 2006 tacoma good enough to make a difference. I don't hate the stereo just want a little more than it gives me. Any suggestions?

    No!!!
The head unit has very little power, and an undefeatable circuit that limits the volume to prevent the paper speakers from ripping.
Get a new HU before new speakers. Double DIN's are really nice in that space.

X2 a new HU will make a world of difference the stock HU just doesn't have the power.

+2 on headunit replacement. The stock speakers will sound better with a new head unit, but replacing the speakers by themselves will make absolutely no difference in sound.
