Automatic shifter got progressively more stiff and difficult to shift, with gear indicator not showing unless I shifted back and forth forcefully.

Truck began not starting unless forcefull put into park.

Took apart shifter assembly in cab to clean, and noted that it was clean with no issues.

Lubed linkage at the end of shifter cable and that helped to loosen things up and allow truck to start consistently, but it would soon get stiff again. After lubing when the shifter is more fluid I still can't shift into 2 and L.

Starting is becoming more intermittent regardless of how stiff or loose the shifter is.

My question is, how is the neutral safety switch activated, and where exactly is it located?
Is it electronically activated, because I don't see it connected to the cable/linkage.
And lastly, the constant lubing of the linkage doesn't last very long at all. Time to replace the linkage and cable?
    Thanks for any help.

The NSS/Transmission Range switch is on the right (passengers side) of the transmission, it is operated by the shift linkage.
If you suspect a cable problem you could block the wheels, disconnect it from the transmission, and see if it moves freely and the transmission lever moves freely.
I'm wondering if your NSS is maybe binding up instead of the cable.

The NSS is mechanically connected to the shifter cable linkage through the transmission? So if the NSS is sticky/seizing up I'd feel that in the shifter.

Yes, the shaft that the cable is connected to goes through to the other side of the trans where the NSS is attached.
