Is it worst when going in and out of a parking spot?

My bet is on a bad power steering pump.

If you already had repairs done to your Toyota I’m posting to let you know there’s a program with Toyota manufacturer where you may get reimbursed.
I spoke to them today. A woman said send your repair order, receipt, and copy of proof of ownership to:
    Toyota Customer Experience Center
    Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A.
    P.O. box 259001
    ssc-csp reimbursement
    Plano, Tx 75025

I believe this covers Toyota’s from 2005 to date. But I’m not sure. Mine is a 2006 Tacoma. So..

Of course I am referring to the u-joint for the steering shaft. Toyota is aware there is an issue.

I guess I’d have to agree with some about the safety issue. This to me is a no brainer. If your steering ceases then you will have no control of your truck. And for about $400.00 you can have it replaced and repaired. And it’s possible to get reimbursed for the repairs. If you just spray it down with lube it will not resolve the problem but prolong the enevitable. To each their own tho. Good luck and be safe

Replaced Frame and leaf springs under recall in 2016. Steering rack replaced in June 2017.
I just started having the same problem a week ago with my 06 TRD (150k). Fluid level is fine. The entire steering rack assembly was replaced in June 2017. I was going to check first with the mechanic who did the work. Should I check with Toyota first?

I just took mine into the dealer a week ago with the same problem when I was getting some other work done. The dealer solution was to clean it and lubricate. No charge. :notsure:

I went to my own mechanic. While my truck was being fixed I called Toyota main office in tx. That’s where I got the info to be reimbursed. The ujoint or knuckle on the steering shaft on my truck was rusted and corroded. I don’t think it would have made a difference on how bad it looked as to it being replaced however. The bearings are small pin bearings. And when they rust it doesn’t take long for them to disintegrate to dust.
When I told Toyota of my issue they said to take it to a dealer. I said it’s already being fixed as we speak. That’s when they told me about the reinbursement program they have for that issue.
Toyota also said that they sent the info of this issue to all the dealers as of oct 30 of this year. But I may still be reimbursed for the work by sending the repair order receipt and copy of proof of owner to that address I posted.
So should you talk to Toyota first?
I guess they’ll tell you to take it to a dealer. And you’ll prolly hafta pay outta pocket for the work and then try to get your money back by mail. Otherwise it’s up to you. Because they said nothing about a recall on it at this time. But being it a safety issue there will prolly be one soon. But I don’t think I’d wait on the repairs.

I had the steering shaft replaced on my 07 TRD Sport last April.
Thank you Looneytune for the info on the reimbursement program.
I was experiencing the same issue of stiff steering and the shaft was replaced for $460.
I gathered the necessary info and sent it out last night. I'll let you know if I actually do get a check.

I do the same thing, hit it with some good penetrating fluid at each oil change and call it a day. No problems since i started this.

Thank you loonytoon. You have a lot of good advice pertaining to this issue. I too have the same problem with my 09 Tacoma. I did spray the daylights out of the joint, and it did solve the problem for a few months, but I just noticed it acting up again. I am probably going to replace the shaft. If Toyota knows of the issue, I wonder if they would replace it under some kind of warranty. Maybe if we ask nicely. :fingerscrossed:

To everyone who said thank you for my post. You are very welcome. Hopefully Toyota will know just how many Tacoma owners are having the same problem maybe not only will they do a recall but hopefully they’ll take heed to it and make the necessary changes on the assembly line. Because a rubber boot around the knuckle would have prevented this. I’m seriously considering finding one that would fit with a cpl of clamps just might prevent it from going out again.
Or if they do recall this maybe that would be the fix they use. Personally I’ve never had this kind of issue with any other vehicle i owned before.

In march 2016, I had posted about this issue as well. I've been spraying the shit out of that u joint for 2 years. It does help, but i agree it's just a temporary band aid. I have an 06 TRD w/138,000 that runs awesome so I'm excited to hear i can finally get this fixed and get reimbursed. This is a safety issue and should be recalled. Poor design. Thanks Looneytoon for that info!

So...i went to the dealer and they admitted there was rust built up on u joint, but sprayed it "for now". They said the lower shaft should be replaced "at some point" This is what caused the steering to seize. I'm just amazed that this was there solution to the problem. .Now a phone call to Toyota HQ is next

LMK how that goes. Mine did that after a summer of wheeling and almost sent me into a rock turning into my driveway. Happens on tundras as well actually, we just rec'd one on some ladies bro'd out tundra a few days ago, same issue. Smh toyota. I was thinking about putting a cv boot on it or something next time it gives me issues.

CV boot doesn't sound like a bad idea. I'm waiting for Toyota HQ to call me back. Should be today or tomorrow. I will post when I hear from them.

So Toyota HQ called me back and are going to give me $350 credit at the dealership for repair. Better than nothing I guess...

It kind of goes by a dealership being nice kind of basis. Most wont, toyota knows its a problem but kinda tries to keep it suppressed. You are probably on your own, shaft cost about 170, not too hard to do
