so explain to me, how this isn't currently what is happening? they've been shorting since before GME was at $20 a share. It's been well over $120 for months now.

I’m not trolling, my point all along, was asking what’s forcing them to cover. That’s still the only question that matters and needs an answer. For some reason the cost to borrow remains cheap. The most common thought is that since they are so deep in the shorts, that they will be ruined if they have to cover. So their only choice is to keep fighting and try to get us to sell and tank the price.

 

I'm going to look more into this. I need to know why the rates are what they are. it doesn't make any sense, that they can borrow millions of shares for practically free.

 

When many investors go short on a stock, and the supply of shares to borrow goes down, the rate to borrow increases.

 

so naked shorts = 1% borrow rate?

That I don’t know. Based on that, there is either not significant shorting, or there are plenty of shares to borrow

 

It’s not in the best interest of the loaner for this thing to go tits up. And if they skyrocket the borrow rates the likelihood that it goes tits up increases significantly because the shorts ability to maintain any footing they have drops. The only person a margin call will benefit is someone holding shares hoping for a squeeze.

 

I believe that's the ANNUAL interest rate too...so daily it's $57,050/365=$156.30....Less than 1 share...

When the stock was shorted at $20 the rate was pennies compared to today...
It's a war of attrition...keep bleeding the long shorts and buy shares and hold...
This has never been done before. In the past the hedgefunds shorted companies into bankruptcy which automatically closes their short position nearly tax free...it's an insane situation but there is multiplier that's astronomical if you are short enough on a stock that goes bankrupt vs realized gains and taxes...
