I was going to reply, but it kept getting worse. I'm on the opposite side, where the software I work with is so new the bugs I find as an early adopter get written corrected and the notes I take make it into the documentation lol

Why do all these industries run on such old software? We're IN Industry 4.0 right now, with IIoT and all those buzzwords. Maybe it'll trickle down from manufacturing to other industries?

When I worked at the VW dealer, we used a text based program but used touch screen tablets... it was the most horse shit half assed setup I had ever seen. It would of been so nice if they used a web based system with touch icons, drop down lists, and text boxes. But instead everything has a code that pulls up prefilled text, then you have to backspace through the whole thing to type in your own words. There was no going back to change 1 word, you had to backspace the whole damn thing, you had to hit enter when you got close to the end of the line or it would just stop typing. If you screwed up on a word and already hit enter to go to the next line, you had to void the whole thing.

It was very painfull. They tried to replace my desktop with a tablet, after they swapped them out, I went in the back, got another desktop and screen and threw the tablet in a drawer. Im not using that trash to make the dealer look "more personable" as we walk around with our tablets and take 3 times longer to do anything.

First...IRS I believe is running OLDER shit than that...
    2. We always joke at work that this database software we use is like the hold out house in the middle of the sky scrapers....It started as a tent...and then someone built a lean too over it...and then put a small cabin over that...and then built a house over the cabin...and then put a 3 family home over that...and then a 10 condo unit over that...and then a 10 story apartment building....and now we've got a 50 story building....but down in the basement is still that pop tent with a bed roll

Expensive, widespread adoption, entrenched boomers and X'ers that don't want to adapt...

$300-400k for a small gov is hard to swallow when "what we have works just fine" except when there is no one but unicorn specialists to work on the decrepit softwares.

I questioned "why" when a neighboring colleague said they're on AS400 since the early 90's and she got super defensive of their relic. "It is good software"

They are 4 times our size and we are on newer 2015+ software.
