Once OCT expiry passes I'll have some more funds. Might at as well keep averaging down at this point. Is 100K shares to many? lol

100K would be $1000 for every penny of stock movement. At least it would be easy to do the math on the fly. lol

    Hi Everyone,

I pop in and check this thread out every once in a while but rarely have any idea wtf you guys are talking about.
    Lol.

Anyways, just curious what people's opinion is on 401k's.
I've been putting the max I'm allowed to for the past 2 years and prior to that contributing 11% of my check since 2013.
My employer matches up to 2,400 annually.
    My portfolio is balanced.

I currently have a decent amount in it and am 38.
I feel like we're heading toward a dark place in our country.
What are some ways I can safeguard/transfer what I currently have until I feel more comfortable with the state of our nation without being severely penalized?

You're 38? I wouldn't touch it personally, just ride the storm. If it gets to a point where it never comes back, we've long since started living mad max style.

Depending on hour yours is set up, you may be able to move it into safer funds within your portfolio. I've done that in the past, like a couple years back when i mitigated serious losses unlike other people i know. Research your options but i wouldn't worry too much right now.

This thread is not for someone looking for safety. US Large Cap has been the right play for the last 10 years. You can go cash and/or US Gov securities and loose to inflation. Crypto is the new gold, and crypto is anybody’s guess. Real estate is on fire, will it continue?

I agree with @kairo. Don’t touch it. Max out your match and your first investment priority is and should be $401k. The match combined with tax free investment gives you a 25%+ return dollar for dollar before it even hits the market.
take an imaginary $100. Someone making 100,000 a year that hundred dollars is going to be taxed and will be about $72 take home. You would then buy stock, say 1 share of “$X” with that $72. It goes up to $100 inside a year and you take profits of $28. You now Owe capital gains taxes on that $20. You pay your $3 tax on your gains and after 1 year you have $97 from your $100.
Now if you invested that $100 in your 401(k) first it would be tax-free so you get $100 worth of stock “$X”. On top of that you have what your employer is matching, let’s say 30% for a yearly investment on a fictional salary so you have $130 of stock “$X”. Now that undergoes the same percentage increase as it did when it went from $72-$100. That’s about 38%. So your $130 becomes $179 after one year. All of the returns are tax free. So dollar for dollar you’ve turned your $100 into 179 using a 401(k) or $100 investing on your own. You see how you’ve got almost double the return by using the 401(k) benefits. Magnify this over 45 years of investing and it’s an insane difference. That’s why 401(k) maximization should always be your first choice. If the stock market dips keep buying that dip you’ve got plenty of time. One thing you can do is watch how you’re different funds are recovering after a dip. If fund A and B dip 30% on a crazy market correction and two months later fund A has recovered but fund B has not you can move more assets to fund B to try to capture the recovery twice. I did this post Covid with my 401(k). Banking stocks lagged behind technology stocks. I took advantage of this to get a massive increase in my 401(k) year over
