I believe it's true, but what can you do to make the short cover at open market? Who knows...
When you "Retire" the debt it means you paid it off without the obligation of paying with shares. So if you were shorting the shit out of the stock (geneva roth) to 20x dip when you're repaid with millions of shares...and then you're paid in cash and STILL need to now buy all those shares...
You might just keep punting by continuing to short and hope for that bankruptcy scenario that yields maximum returns...
BUT it takes money to keep shorting...and someone might eventually call in your marker ($GME et al) and you eventually have to cover.
