Better in some aspects. I'm in Linux a lot as the robots I use are based on Linux, however I have to switch a lot between windows and Linux as a lot of software just isn't stable or even usable on Linux.

If I wanted a comp to game on I'd still be dual-booting. Fact is I juts like to game on a console more so my comp is not used that way. Steam coming to Linux has made it totally gameable if you prefer that route.

If your a serious comp gamer you should for sure be running Windows. For now.

Yeah that's the move. I only play Fallout, Skyrim, and Halo and I'm not a big gamer dude.

Hey I kept it relevant by saying how much I can loose on this machine!!

 

Tech is one of the sure fire ways to burn money. It's also one of the funnest. I've been debating upgrading my desktop but that pretty much means a fresh new build. MoBO, CPU, Graphics card and memory if I was going to do it right. It's still running strong though so I might hold off.

The DAQ is close enough to even I'm not worried. Asia is doing OK. Still a lot of time to go south or north. lol

It's worth it. There's nothing like dropping $2K on new tech. Putting it all together following the directions and multiple youtube sites. Then waiting for it to POST for the first time while holding your breath and wondering if you just wasted $2K. lol

 

I spent less than $1k building this machine originally, and the watercooling stuff wasn't terribly expensive either.

I'd wait a little until DDR5 has been out for a year. Alder lake or w/e Ryzen has will be out longer and hopefully cheaper. All the newer stuff has been coming out and is SO expensive. IE, high end DDR4 is cheaper or equivalent in some cases to mid DDR5.

Or just wait until the end of the month when GME moons and buy AMD yourself

DDR5 is why I need the new mobo. Slots are the same but the bus speed on my current mobo won't handle 5 speeds and channels. When I go to DDR5 I'll do a complete refresh. While new to Mobo's DDR5 has been in use in GPUs for a few years. It's proven at this point. The only reason to wait is for prices to go down and memory per stick to go up. Unlike DDR4, DDR5 isn't capped at 16GB per module.

 

I'm already stressed just reading this lol.

 

I heard rumors of DDR5 to DDR4 adapters, but I'm not sure how useful they'd be if the MOBO can't make use of it lol

 

27” feels crazy next to my 13”. I still want a 42” curved monitor though lol

The memory controller is built into modern CPU's. Only the latest CPU's like Alder Lake can use DDR5 so an adapter would be beyond useless. Every manufacturer also had to change the socket to make use of the new mem controller and increase bus speeds in the mobo. In short, if you wanna run DDR5 it's a new CPU and new mobo unless you are on a very new build.
