Jackson is nuts. Too much $$$$ in that town. Used to be quite quaint 20 years ago

every time i look at the housing market i still go "what in the fuck is going on here" and i work in construction and have lived here for 6 years.

look at this hot garbage. probably the second or 3rd least desirable appt complex in town...4 years ago i thought some friends were nuts when they paid 365 or whatever for one of these
    upload_2022-2-8_17-13-40.jpg

all these western towns were quaint 20 years ago when it was just ranchers and river rats/ski bums living there. sad, but inevitable change

I've been hunting in the gros ventre since I was in my teens, and I've seen the change. Haven't been back there in a few years, but I'll be back next elk season. If you're still in town I'll buy you a beer.

Yep. Jackson, Sun Valley, Taos, Prescott, Flagstaff, Idylwild, everywhere in CO. What where once reasonably affordable seasonal areas are now ultra-high end money areas. The type of money where people don't have a problem paying $1M for a shithole then bulldozing it to build there dream home for another $3M. I'm just glad I got to climb in all those areas when they where still off the radar.

Hell, even Bishop is starting along that path. In the 18 years I've been out here crowds have increased at least 10 fold. I used to go cragging and know 9 out of 10 people climbing that day. Now I go to the same spot and know maybe 2 out of 100. If Bishop continues along this path my house will easily be worth 3x what I paid for it 10 years ago. It's already doubled. lol

Those housing prices are insane. I’m living the highlife in my Tacoma under the bridge down by the river. Hot oodles of noodles with Wisconsin smoked sausage chunks in a pot over the fire, doesn’t get any better than this. Just waiting on the market to recover.

The most cash poor time in my life was 2004-2009. I worked less then 2 months each of those years. The other 10 months I climbed all over the US, Canada and Mexico. Top Ramen and potatoes where pretty much a staple part of every meal. Looking back, even though I was poor as shit, it was the happiest I've ever been.

Times like those make fond memories, money isn’t everything is it.
The meals I talked about we actually had on trips canoeing, fishing and camping in the Boundary waters canoe area and Quetico Provincial Park in Canada. Often had fried fish with those noodles. Sometimes we wouldn’t see another human for days. Did see bear, moose, beaver, eagles, Northern Lights, and lots of fish lol. Awesome times as well.

    Ok Alex Honnold.
Fun fact, my friends dad took Honnold to his first outdoor climbs. He knew Alex when Alex was 18 and only going to the climbing gym in Sacramento area.

But in all seriousness that's awesome you were able to do that.

It's not so much the lack of money but the lack of real responsibility that is freeing. For 60 months the hardest decision I had to make was where to climb that day. Not having anything holding you back is the only way to truly understand how freeing that really is. Combine that with the fact that I was climbing all the time and when you climb you only think about the next hand or foot hold. So, most of my awake time was spent not thinking about anything and when I did have to make a decision about something it was a trivial one at best. lol

So apparently GME is in the watch business now as well. I have an eco-drive I bought in '04 that's still ticking. This, this is tempting. With a steel band on it, of course

I have a friend trying to score a 3 family home in a local city...wants to live in one unit, renovate it, move to the next etc and in 3 years be out to move to a house and use that to pay for both mortgages...He's being cockblocked left and right by local realtors because "he's not one of the usual buyers".....
There's apparently a cabal of owners that are gobbling up all the multifamily homes...

haha our previous neighbor (he since sold his 3.6m house and bought a 10m house our company was building up the street) told us that when our house came on the market he almost bought it, just so he wouldn't have to listen to construction next door for a year and a half. He's actually a really cool dude and came over for a few parties even, but that kind of fuck you money is so annoying lol. It took everything we had to put together enough to get the down payment and get the loan, and he was gonna buy it in cash so he didnt have to listen to people swing hammers.

ya i desperately want to exit the 40hr bullshit routine and live a life where your daily needs and decisions are more...physical and "simple". mtn biking, climbing, skiing, sailing...all those days i dont look at my phone once (except to play spotify) and couldnt care less what is going on in the world or what anyone else is doing. its pure bliss. someone else can make 150k a year and buy new cars and stuff, i want no part of it. some people love the fast paced work life, exciting careers, money, decision making blah blah blah...but i just want it a little more simple and more connected to nature.

I don't think anybody on this planet aside from sociopaths want to keep working to gain more wealth just for the sake of having more wealth. I think most of us just want to have enough money to live our lives in peace and comfort without having to give up our time to our bosses just because "that's the way the world works"
