And we still haven't even hit "historic" levels of inflation, though I'm not saying that we won't. In the late teens and early 1920's it was up around 20% (and that rate was for almost five years). It spiked again at 19% for several months in 1947. It only reached 14% in the 80's. And here we are at 7% and so many are freaking out.

It dropped down pretty low a couple of years ago when nobody could go outside for ... reasons ... but the Federal Reserve misread the situation and figured that the inflation was going to be transitory (before you point at one party or another it might be worth looking up who makes up the Fed's board of governors). That mis-read of the situation is largely why we are where we are.

For us, the challenge is going to be figuring out when the peak is so that we can sell before the crash that is almost certainly coming at some point.

 

Nah. Just hold and buy more if a 'crash', however you define it, occurs. You do not want to miss dividend reinvestment at cheap share prices.

I myself expect the much more likely outcome is a few flat years followed by a return to growth.

Yeah I am holding what I have until it is green, and not investing more other than my 401k/HSA contributions.

I max out HSA and pretax 401k, and am also putting a good bit into post tax 401k, so I can roll the post tax over into the Roth IRA. I might stop the post tax contributions and auto investing of HSA. Or just roll the post tax money early so it can sit as cash in the IRA.

 

Another one on that last candle. Port is up 10% today. I think I’ll quit while I’m ahead.
