I've bet years of potential retirement on this play, so I'm fairly confident in "trust me, bro"

Part of the problem is that our "easy" sources of good oil have largely been found (and don't meet our needs) while the less easy sources aren't profitable. We can make more than enough to meet our needs, but if it costs $100 a barrel (completely made up number) to get it out of the ground in North Dakota, refine it into something useful and get it to market but Saudi Arabia can do it for $50, guess where our oil is going to be coming from? The oil companies aren't in the business of patriotism, they (and their investors) want to maximize profit. As a result production changes will always lag market demand changes; they're not going to make a big move in regards to production unless they're fairly sure they know which way the wind is blowing. Right now they're spooling up GOM production since it looks like the higher prices are here to stay. Prior to everyone having to stay home for ... reasons ... the price of oil was already on a bit of a down turn and it was cheaper to get oil from overseas than it was to pull it out of the GOM.

The question is, how to we make it profitable for the companies to compete with domestic production when there's a higher profit margin sourcing from elsewhere? We can offer incentives and subsidies, but what's to guarantee that will bring the price down? My personal experience is that isn't going to work. I work on commercial ships. When fuel prices go up it often causes shipping companies to impose fuel surcharges. This helps defray the cost for increased fuel prices and passes the cost onto the customer. What do you think happens when fuel prices drop? If you said that the fuel surcharge goes down, you'd be wrong. Every once in a while you'll see one removed, but it's far more common for that surcharge to remain in place. The next time the price of fuel goes up? Well, increase the surcharge since the old one obviously can't remain the same rate if the price of fuel is going up.

So what's the answer? Tariffs? Nationalizing the petroleum industry? :notsure: I don't know what the answer is but I'm open to ideas. Right now I feel that there's too much outrage in our nation and not enough rational thinking.

"temporary" price increases or surcharges are almost never temporary, and that's across more than just the transport industry.

Leaving the politics out of it (a fantasy only possible in internet discussions), clearly the acceleration of alternatives and, in the near term especially, electrical powering of formerly petro-fueled devices.

That's the concept on paper. Simple enough on paper. Heads of government of oil states, the petro lobby, and politicians from places like Midland TX et al will completely ruin that idea's anus in practical application because interests gonna interest.

Hollywood examples are not always the most truthful, but they do tend to be easily digestible for the ADD generations, so, here we are:

Lol sitting way "prettier" at $30 a barrel 3 years ago. It isn't rocket science when you shout "Green Energy" and import more than export anything. It's not just just gas my friend, It's everything on your shelf. Even if you can find it on the shelves to begin with.

Hell why not $0 a barrel if we're picking randomly. I remember the day it happened

Our biggest export is refined petroleum. We import oil refine it and export it.
