You're not the only one here that grew up with less then a lot of other kids. One of the staple meals of my childhood was pasta with butter, salt and pepper. That's it. Best part was my mom had me convinced it was a special meal. Hell, I still have it a few times a year because it reminds me of a simpler time in life.

48 years later I'm reasonably secure financially. The reason is something my grandfather said to me when I was about 15 or so. "Work hard, try to do the best you can at your job and you'll always have one". Simple but true. I have managed to become a sought after employee rather then an employee who is seeking. It's a great position to be in. In hindsight, choosing a more recession proof career would have been a better choice but I'm a damn good hammer swinger and I truly enjoy what I do. So there's that. lol

The system is designed to support a population on welfare. That system needs to go. If you want to work great. If you don't I feel zero need for my tax dollars to help you and your kids out. Severe mental and physical disabilities excluded.

Look at it this way. What could a nation do with the $1.8T spent on fed, state, and local welfare programs? I'm betting they could lower taxes while still allowing for everyone who wants to work to get a job that pays a living wage. Inflation happens when the supply changes. Let's keep the supply the same by eliminating welfare programs. Make people work or die. Sounds harsh and maybe it is.

One thing I know for certain. Even though I grew up with less then a lot of my classmates my mom never once tried to collect welfare and busted her ass working two jobs so I could have a decent childhood. A lot of those kids that had more then me. Yeah, their mom's where driving Cadillac Escalades thanks to welfare. That right there is why, this part of the system at least, is fucked.

I think it comes down to the government has a spending problem. Because that's what the government does, throw a stupid amount of money at a problem and see what happens.

LOVE Spaghetti with butter and pepper....
We threw a bowl of that in the middle of the table many times as a "Well, that's all you're getting so fill up with this"
Because my brother and I were both playing high school football at the same time and would eat 6,000 calories...So 1LB of spaghetti with any meal...
You're not eating 3 pork chops...

Only 12 pages late (that's what I get for going camping), but Michael Madsen doesn't mean anything to me :) I do like quite a few of the movies he's been in though.

There's a fine line with actually living a little and investing. Most people never see too much of everything they save for the finish line for. Or never really get to enjoy those things until it's too late. Not saying blow money, but that paragraph sounded quite miserable to say the least. I don't mean you're miserable, so I'm not knocking, each person looks at life differently from that perspective. I'm tight with my money, get picked on by family and friends about being somewhat tight. However, I never pass up anything I truly want to do or buy if I want it. If someone calls and wants to take a trip, money isnt an option about going on it or not and thats the way i like it..but then again that paragraph also depends on your age. If you're younger, smart out look. If you're a little older, loosen up a tee bit and enjoy a golf round and a beer with your buddies here and there.

If you're chasing a luxury life, you'll never be happy or be ahead by always wanting whats new or trendy. I'd say over a majority of people live outside their means when it comes to that. Live within your means and what makes you happy spend your money on. Just my .02

It makes total sense but so many don't because they're trying to keep up with someone else.

If you can manage without your employer unfairly firing your ass, discuss compensation with your peers at work.

Employers make it seem like that's illegal to do, or against policy (it's illegal to make such a policy...); because all it does is create headaches for them when people come asking for $$$ where they were happy to work for peanuts just yesterday.

Remember not to get upset with a coworker who does the same job and makes more -- if anything direct that ire at your employer.

It's easier to negotiate when you know for a fact whether your coworkers are better compensated for the same work.

Employees want as much compensation as possible for their time and employers want to extract as much value from employees as possible without paying any more than they have to (which = moar value!)

23 is young. I worked in College and didn't get out with friends to blow money all the time by eating/drinking. However in my late 20s, early 30's looking back im glad i was tighter with my money as well. Simply because i never had to miss out on things I've wanted to do. Traveling, sky diving, scuba diving, cross country road trips, etc. Get out and enjoy the country/world a little at your age if you can afford it. Seems like you're smart with your money and being younger with that outlook you'll be just fine. I promise you'll never look back and wish you wouldn't have spent money on experience.

    Not really.

I'm tall (6'4") and decades of being a vuluptuous babe, so it finally caught up right when I turned 30.
