They're probably good for people who refuse to take responsibility for their late life needs (and they are legion in the US), but even 1/4 assed passive investing of the same % of gross income over a 40 year career will leave people way better off.

There's been a lot written about how terrible the "returns" are on Social Security compared to modest investment returns.

 

I'm calling bullshit. In June 2021 which was the last report for CalPERS it's total value was $470 billion.

You've got PBGC, but there's no way it can cover large states like CA, let alone multiples thereof. It has about 112 billion in assets and 164 billion in liabilities right now as it is.
