Why do I feel like the bigass banks have been hyping 75bps so that if it comes in 50 they can gobble bajillions off misplaced short term options?

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
They can't do that. It would be market manipulation. That would be illegal, silly goose.

Being suspicious of bad faith bank behavior is optimistic?

When I read this, I think of Yosemite Sam keeping the Yankees in their dugout in Chattanooga.

Or maybe crypto is an inherently riskier investment than something like an index fund and in times of market uncertainty/doubt the risky investments are the first ones to get sold off? BTC = Tulip

This would be my argument. Since there's no value production a lot of folks stay away or get out early.

BTC might be risky and the first to be sold, but I wouldn't compare it to tulips.

Or maybe you could, since BTC has no real utility.

But other crypto projects and their respective blockchains have plenty of utility. Look at Cardano or Ethereum -- both of those projects are being leveraged in a variety of ways beyond pure speculative investments, with many other promising projects built atop them.

So while BTC may take a while to (or simply never) recover, I think other projects (unlike tulips) will regain their lost value. This rumored "crypto winter" just seems like an extended buying opportunity in my uninformed opinion.
