Nope. Wrong. How many times am I going to have to post that there are only very specific options that trade after close…like SPY options. Standard options contracts are based on closing price on day of expiration not after hours. You could call your broker and elect to execute an out of the money contract if you believed it was going to go in the money after hours and wanted to take advantage of something like earnings on a Monday but that is extremely unusual.

Options stop trading at 4PM. The underlying equity does not. The settlement of options is on Saturday. I'm to tired to give a shit by finding it in the OCC but this was a 10 second GOOGL search. I am positive that the AH's closing price on equities is what decides ITM or OTM.

Yeah but what if it goes in the money after hours and you want to sell to close, Because you don’t have the finances to cover the exercise? I find it hard to believe that you can’t sell to close but the options are still in play?

 

Well that's easily avoided by being rich.

 

If you want to sell to close you need to do it before 4PM. If you keep it open and it goes ITM AH's you get margin called even with a non-margin account. Usually if it's that close you just call your broker and put in a Do Not Exercise request. Then if it goes ITM AH's nothing happens and you do not owe money or take delivery of the stock.
