Wonder how people with int'l holdings are feeling about it lately with currency risk taking a huge chunk out of any potential.

I'm taking some profits at staggered intervals on my recent buys in the .60 - .80 range. But the sustained volume over the last several days has grabbed my attention and I'm holding onto probably more than I would have otherwise for this go-round

@theesotericone One more big climb for the summer! Mt. Owen, 847 ft shorter than the grand, but way more technical and way less traveled. 17 hours car to car, 5 raps getting down. I was definitely above my pay grade on this one, and I dont think I want to flash 5.4 climbs solo any more lol. Compared to Owen the Grand was a walk in the park. Not a soul up there, which added to the mental strain, the easiest ledge and chimney to the top was covered in snow and ice, so i was kicking ice chunks out of foot holds with 1000 ft of exposure below lol. Another chimney (also full of ice) hang fired icicles at me in the morning, then was a full on waterfall on the rap down. Physically, it was fun/fine climbing and i feel pretty good after a 17 hr day, but that was really hard mentally. A little too much time in the "do or die" state of mind lol.

Owen, from the bottom of the glacial moraine

    Bitchin!

I've been talking about it elsewhere a bit but I'm starting to put the ideas and plan in place to do the Appalachian Trail in 2024. Way less climbing than this, it's been a while since I've done any cliff faces. Probably will stay that way a while.

Nice man. Do you think if it was summer and that ice wasn't present you'd have felt less mentally strained?

It takes a long time to become truly comfortable sans rope. Even when you are comfortable sometimes it just doesn't feel right. Whenever I'm not 100% feeling like going for it I down climb and go home. A few years ago I went to solo Split Mountain via the NE Arete. It's 5.8 or 5.9 depending on who you ask. It has a great story behind it. Fred Beckey and Galen Rowell went to do the FA back in the 70's. Fred decided he didn't like the rock and rapped back down after a short pitch. Galen decided to finish it. Solo and onsight. He did.

With a history like that I saved it for an onsight free solo. There's almost no info online or in guidebooks but I've done about 30 Rowell routes and never had any issues. The hike in is 6 miles with 6000' of gain. I hiked in Friday night and scoped the line from Red Lake. Saturday morning I got up and started the route.

I felt a little off but not so much that I was willing to turn back. After the first 150' or so I found a little ledge to sit on. I wasn't feeling it. I wasn't nervous and I'd never felt insecure on any of the moves but I just wasn't in my usual head space. Something was off. Not only was I not feeling it I was 150' up on dubious rock in the 5.9 range. I looked up. I looked down. I even looked sideways for a way off.

The best way down was the way I came up. I down climbed a little slower then normal. I got to the base and retraced my steps to Red Lake. Once at the tent I sat for a long while in quiet reflection. Mostly reflecting on the fact I just backed off. I finally got up and grabbed my fishing rod. Red Lake has some fat ass Golden's.

After fishing for about 15 minutes I heard a small rockfall. I looked up and sure as shit there's some small basketball sized rocks going straight down the NE Arete. I still can't say if I would have been in their path by that time but all the feelings of "failure" immediately left my mind. Fishing ended up being good and it also afforded me the time to look at Mt Tinemaha. It sits about 2 miles down trail from Split. It's summit sits at 12500'. What I spotted was the ridge that goes from the summit over to split. You can't see it from anywhere but Split or Red Lake. Plan 2 just got formed.

Sunday I got up early and raced up Tinemaha via the South Rib. After the summit the real fun began. That ridge I spotted runs for about 1 mile and is knife edge most of the time. It terminates at the 4th class route up Split. I raced up Split and tagged that summit. Then just to punish myself for being such a pussy the day before I ran over and tagged Mt Prater which is a mile or so from Split. Then I headed back down and hiked out.

That ridge is one of the best features I've climbed in the Sierra. It's like a bigger, longer version of Matthes Crest in Toulumne. I never reported it and this is the first time I'm telling about it in print form. Hopefully it stays under the radar. I'm fairly certain posting this story in an investment thread won't hurt that chance. lol
