I thought it was Icahn or Ackman, can't remember, but they basically went on said "Oh my god hell is coming", the market tanked for a day, they bought a ton of stuff, and then the market recovered the next day, they made millions with that interview. I thought they had a JPMCB bank connection, but not sure.

I don't know why I thought he was tightly connected to JPMCB, he might be, but looks like I might have been wrong about the connections. BUT the strategy was still there. Market tanked, then went back up quickly.

Doesn't surprise me. I saw Apple's dumping into entertainment/streaming too, doesn't surprise me that Amazon would look at the entertainment industry and jump on movie theaters too. Come see in theater for half price w/ prime, 2 weeks early in theaters or whatever.

I bet they'll do a "binge watch special" weekend type of thing. "we're playing stranger things Episode 1,2,3,4,and 5 this weekend! Come binge watch here! 10 minute break between episodes, half price for prime members!"

 

The quality of Prime video has deteriorated so much over the last few years, it makes me wonder why I still even bother. Makes sense they'd want a failing movie theater chain so they can continue their modus operandi of constant disappointment.

 

They're in it for the real estate

That's true for all the streaming services though. They all started as the "cable killer", then they collectively became the new cable. Oh that on X, no that's on Y, no that's on Z, etc. Granted, it's easy to do an a-la-carte style setup, whereas cable was not.

And never forget, there's always the yarr matey option.

 

Not sure how many locations amc owns vs leases. commercial real estate is the next toxic bag of garbage tied up in swaps. Housing had its 2008, CMBS is next

9.1B in assets. Real estate not reported/broken out. Half the theaters become fulfillment centers, or whole foods, or book stores, etc and they become a sort of campus-esque thing with an all in one entertainment stop/draw.

Yup, but top to bottom Amazon. Instead of just being a piece of the pie, they'd be the whole shebang.

And, their biggest gain, data collection/mining.

The ancient scrolls also speak of this. There was a lot of research done into this over a year ago. The super succint version is that Bezos (who started his career as a hedge fund quant) actively colluded with other hedge funds to go long Amazon and short competitors within their desired growth markets. Drive the price down into bankruptcy or acquisition range, consolidate, and keep on going until you own everything. There's another guy that does this, but I can't probably say his name here. Hint: Utah.

There is no evidence to suggest this has stopped.
