Market is at or near ATH 60-80% of the time depending on where you set the bound for "near" (Within 5%? 10%? 12%?). Basically, if historical rates of return hold up, you really can't miss as long as you hold 7 years minimum. In the vast majority of cases, even 2 or 3 years will still yield a positive nominal return though the odds of a miss increase and inflation can much more easily muck with real return.

What's the saying the average investor never makes average returns or something like that? DCA comes out on top 99.99% of the time, lack of discipline in sticking to it causes people to make less returns than average.

 

The sector has more to do with DCA working then anything. Tech works. Finance works. Energy works. Consumer staples work.

Funny. Last month my wife checked in on our joint brokerage account. Then she saw the returns on BBIG. Yeah, I got yelled at. lol

 

Yep. You just have to hope that the market doesn't suffer a huge great recession style loss if your near retiring. Imagine being 60 and having most of your funds in stocks when 2008 rolled in.

 

SP500 returns by year

If you were 60, in 2008, and had everything in stocks, you'd be fine by 65 when you retired. If not, up a little! Not 10% YOY in that timeframe, but still, you'd be fine.



The average time to return is 2.5 years.

My approach (I AM NOT A FINANCIAL ADVISOR) - everything is in stonks/SP500 until 5 years out of retirement. If, 5 years out, the market is good, COOL! Take your donuts and stash them in cash. If, 5 years out, you're in a tailspin, COOL! hold on tight, and when you recover, THEN pull everything out and stash them in cash (or bonds, whatever).

"Your age should be your bond exposure" means I should be 30% bonds, 70% stocks. I'll hold 100% stocks until I'm 5 years out, thank you very much!

 

I can tell you that 2 year over I am finally breaking out in my 401k...
