Business was the first thing I brought up.

But cargo is 20% of air traffic. That was the rule of thumb was 80/20 not sure if that's still accurate.

Yes, but your plane ticket your company covers is not an expense to you, the consumer. It will count into CPI but it's not going to affect household budgets. Vacations and travel are one of the first cuts when times are tight because....luxury item.

I am quite sure cargo doesn't buy plane tickets.

There seems to be some accidental conflation of 'airfare' (a person buying a plane ticket) with 'cost of all air travel' (anything going anywhere by plane as a service).

To re-focus the point: The 'above expected' in this report redounds almost entirely to shelter and transportation, meaning broad spectrum inflation across other sectors has largely returned to the pre-COVID typical.

Market is cool with this report because there's nothing in there that presents as a hindrance to rate cuts later this year.

Let's say I had a family member in Vegas and I needed to attend their funeral. It's by far cheaper for me to fly, even on short notice than it is to drive. Same goes for San Fran, salt lake city, usually los angeles, etc. That's technically luxury travel, and airplane is the cheapest method of getting there. It's probably cheaper to fly than it would be to walk, even if I had a month to do it.

Air travel is a necessity, and the .gov will subsidize it at all costs. Hell, they won't even let boeing fail and the doors be fallin' off them mfers

Delta is a lot like Mcdonald's. They're not an airliner. It's a credit card company that operates planes. Mcdonald's is a real estate business that happens to make burgers.

Not to the everyday Joe it sure isn't.

In your funeral example: For people without the money to fly or time to drive, they simply don't attend the funeral.

Is that an unhappy reality? Yes. But unhappy realities are still realities.

Look, all I know is I haven't been on a plane since last August, and that's probably the longest I haven't been on a plane in over a decade and I'm quite pleased with this outcome.

If anybody needs SWA points I've got like 300,000 left lol

    LOL

It really has become a miserable experience.

For me personally it is purely a cost/benefit of dollars v time saved.

I spent quite a few years of my life on the road 2-3 weeks a month. You make a lot of money doing that, but eventually, traveling by plane two to five times a week for three weeks in a row is just not worth the hassle of dealing with anything even resembling the general public at a glorified flying bus stop. I've since left that world and I'm making around 3/4 of what I used to make, but infinitely happier. If I decide to fly again, I'm doing it business class, and it's going to be somewhere fancy. My days of RNO, LAS, LAX, OAK, SEA, RNO in a week are done, even for the money I was making at the time. Not fucking worth it.

When you and the bartender at Denver or Oakland get to know each other on a first name basis because you're there every couple weeks, It's time to re-evalute your life spent in A09, window seat, right side, on every southwest flight.

The straw that broke my camel's back was August last year. Had to fly out on a Sunday to make it to the fucking meeting on Monday morning by 10am. RNO, PHX, IAH. Overnight. IAH, JAN, then two hour drive to the middle of buttfuck mississippi for meetings at the factory for 2 days.
Then, the two hour drive back, JAN to IAH, ANOTHER OVERNIGHT. IAH, LAS, RNO

Didn't matter what they were paying me, I'm never doing a 6 flight trip in less than a week to the southern US in the middle of summer ever again.

    Yeah.
Sooo, I'm a former Boeing employee, and I had a team that was responsible for the training system. Every operation on a plane has a work order that covers what the required training is to perform the work. If the mechanic pulling the order isn't certified or their certification is expired, they can't pull the work order and do the work. So when following proper procedure, there is always a record. You would *think* that if there were any steps missed, the plane could not ship. So if they truly don't have records, then someone went outside of process, and there were insufficient checks at the end to catch that the work had not been performed.

I doubt it, but if it stays here through summer they may not cut after all.

Right....and that's pretty gawdawful bad. So the question is - are they that incompetent and got caught? Or are they hiding something that's somehow worse that looking completely incompetent at basic tasks?

    Yeah.
Agreed, and great question. I suspect it is nothing that is intentional, just a side-effect of many factors coming together resulting in insufficient process controls. I do know that when I was there, they had a big issue with more than half of the workforce being eligible for retirement within 5 years. They focused on bringing in entry-level talent, but they still had a significant gap in the middle. In many cases, the tenured employees were just looking forward to retirement and had no interest in mentoring the new recruits. The 787 problems (lower volume, but significantly different airframe design and lots of planes stacked up) and the later 737 problems (high volume, no idea how they dealt with that) probably helped snowball things a bit, as well as attempting to compete with Airbus on price. Tough time for them -- they have a superior product in my opinion, just need to get their crap together.

Works like that at my work too....you have to be qualified yearly to do all sorts of different things and when your Demonstrations of Competence are expiring it's a big rush to get them all done...
Fun part is when one lapses...and it's friday at 7pm and someone says "Hey, I'm heading out, you can take care of that right?" OH sorry...I don't have a current DOC.....
