Long answer: No, SPY is an exchange trade fund, traded on the exchanges during trading hours. An index fund is not traded on the indices, and is bought/sold at the end of the market day, not intraday.

For example, with Vanguard, VOO is an ETF, which is traded as a normal stock ticker goes. VFIAX is index fund which transacts at the end of the market day. BOTH mirror the S&P500.

I do the same as Kairo but with Fidelity. The reason I landed on Fidelity was because my first company used it for their 401k, and then I just held my 401k there (transfered into a traditional IRA). So, when TD Ameritrade closed up shop, I jut moved everything to Fidelity. Flip coins, if you're just dumping into an S&P500 fund, brokers are all the same. The differences come into when you have multiple accounts, if you're day trading, have wealth management, etc etc.
