I got in a HUGE debate in high school over the virtues of music and lyrics...trying to explain to the hip hop/rap crowd that the discussion of death in grunge wasn't glorifying the taking of life the way rap does but rather trying to convey the pain and misery of life and loss of life...
Not successful but time rewarded me with a victory in principle...
I went to a private school so we had these types of discussions/debates in certain classes...Yeah me in my little monogrammed sweater and tie...

 

Yep. Blind Melon, Sublime, Alice in Chains, Mother Love Bone just off the top of my head.

 

Tool just keeps getting better with age. The new album blew me away. Can't believe people had the balls to criticize it as not being "old school" tool. Of course it's not. It's way deeper musically and lyrically. Everyone grows up. lol

 

One of the craziest was in 1991 at the DCU center in Worcester MA. Alice in Chains opened for Van Halen...they were crazy amazing, but way out of their demo...I love it but was like "WTF this dude (lane staley) did the entire show in a pair of torn levis, shirtless and shoeless..Years later Sammy Hagar would discuss his concerns that AIC was so good that he feared his style of music would be overtaken by what became grunge...
