IS there anyway shorts can set a stop loss? It seems like they would know what's going on.

Oh so the SEC had a closed door meeting Thursday. Seems they may be looking to investigate someone for something. Pure speculation at this point but the codes listed are investigative and criminal nature. This could be for anything though and may or may not be related to the current situation.

Fidelity let's me use funds that aren't considered "settled"

I'll usually send some cash on a Monday and by Tuesday afternoon I can use it as "cash available to trade" even though it didn't "settle." They just flag you if you buy and sell on the same day with unsettled funds

It doesn't work that way. They sell the borrowed shares at market price and buy the shares back when the market price has dropped below what they paid and return them to whomever they were borrowed from, pocketing the difference. There's a little more to it than that but that's how they make money off the deal. They only way they don't have to return the shares is if the company goes bankrupt.

I understood that much, but it seems like they would have it set to buy the shares back if the shares would pass a certain threshold so that they don't get caught in a squeeze.

They get caught in the squeeze from having to return the shares. Prolonging when they get the shares back waiting on a price will only make it worse. Then it will become an FTD.

Another amazing revelation from the call was that if you short a stock and it goes bankrupt you barely owe taxes. I didn't quite catch how the scam worked but it works out best tax wise if the shares go bankrupt...

This might come across as a bit harsh, but read through and I think you'll have a better perspective in the end.

Dock guys are the absolute last guys to talk to about what's inside of a container. Why? Because they have no clue. They don't deal with content manifests. The only thing that gets any sort of external ID as to what's inside is reefer boxes (sometimes) and hazmat (most of the time). Usually they just have the setpoints that they're supposed to be at. Dock guys get a sheet: "Container DECU 1325123413 goes in bay 12 stbd side" that's it.

The guys on board do get copies of the manifest and container contents. It tends to be vague unless there is hazmat, medicine or food involved.

The situation makes a lot more sense to people who actually work in the industry. The ship drifted to the port side of the channel for whatever reason (wind, helmsmen messed up, pilot messed up, who knows at this point but it was likely a combination of the three). The ship then overcorrected to stbd. The port bank of the canal is very steep compared to stbd. Stbd is shallow. The shallow part is what's making things difficult. If they'd just lawn darted into a vertical bank it wouldn't have been a problem. Instead, they plowed through the shallow part until the ship stopped when it finally hit the opposite bank. Recovery would have been a lot easier if the bank had been steep. Now it's the maritime equivalent of being buried to the frame rails and you've only got a few ride-on lawnmowers with bald tires trying to pull you out.

At this point I've been a professional mariner for just shy of a decade and a half. I've been through Suez about a dozen times, Panama about a half dozen. One thing that I've learned and that has been driven home with every maritime incident that makes the news: The news doesn't know jack about the maritime industry. They really, truly, know nothing. The days of having a reporter "on the docks" or familiar with the industry are loooong gone. Geraldo blaming the Jone's Act for Puerto Rico was a perfect example, as he stood in front of a dock that was literally so full of aid delivered by Jone's Act ships that they couldn't offload anymore because hardly any truck drivers were showing up to haul them. This qAnon BS about child trafficking or some conspiracy regarding the cargo is just more of the same sort of BS spouted by people who don't have a solid grasp on how the industry works. The reality is that someone on the ship screwed up. It's as simple as that. Yeah, I know it doesn't have the intrigue of a conspiracy or the mystery of a whodunit... at the end of the day someone didn't react properly and the ship ended up stuck.

It's everything. Reporters rarely report anything based on knowledge or experience. Don't have time to actually learn and investigate anything anymore. I know exactly how you feel when some "expert" is spouting BS with no idea what the hell is going on aside from the bits and pieces that get pushed out as fast as they can before the other outlets do the same thing.

That's what I was referencing, but at a distance. Perfect example was a large offensive. Some asshole former who-gives-a-shit Monday morning quarterback speculation with absolutely no information other than what he thinks happened

No worries man i understand your frustration. I don't trust the mainstream or lowkey news outlets for those same reasons. Just feel it's a bit sketchy that the last time the canal was blocked this bad was in the 60s or something and it started a small war and the captain drawing a pp with the ship route seems mighty intentional. And it makes sense it could be a very simple mistake but then why doesn't such a simple mistake happen more often? Why'd this story get picked up so much this time? You've never heard of drug smugglers sending a decoy car down the highway with a fat bag of weed half out the window with a semi full of coke a couple miles behind smokey and the bandit style? Don't get me wrong i'm a skeptic about everything but it's hard not to be here

i’m still waiting for the day the media reports of story and anyone involved with the situation says “Hey they got that right pretty spot on..” it seems like literally everything reported is reported wrong and at this point it can’t just be the people telling the stories accidentally making mistakes. I believe there’s just no talent left in reporting and they’re just screaming whatever they can as quick as they can to get as many eyes on their advertising as possible.
What I’ve learned is that there was a big wind storm blowing through the canal at the time the ship went through other ships held back and decided not to go but this captain decided to go and the wind blew the ship sideways into the sandbar.

I’m still wondering about the dick drawing :tinfoilhat:
