Yeah I read that too. Let me know how that performs, debating between the rough country and the hypertech. Going to have to ship to my parent’s in AZ for them to ship to me in Long Beach haha

It worked! I need to mess with the numbers a hair to get it dialed in. It’s showing a little faster than actual speed (I went off of actual tire size from the website tiresize.com). The Rough Country is the Hypertech just rebranded. Apparently even their tech support is through Hypertech. RC shipped directly to my house in Mission Viejo.

With all these bad experiences thought i would throw in a positive. Finally ran the truck off road with the new gears. (2nd gen, 4.56 on 33in tires) Everything is looking good and the truck has an easier time/less drama when on the steeper stuff.

I tried the new front e locker but there was nothing that really called for it so couldn't tell how much better the truck climbs with it on, but it does engage.

Hauling all the camping/shooting gear up the highway inclines was ok, it didn't hunt for gears as hard. Before it would jump between 4th and 5th bouncing between 3 and 5k rpm with cruise on around 70mph. It still hunts for gears a bit but its reduced, if i reduce the cruise down to 65 the transmission seems happy. I will probsbly still get an hp tuner module and remap the transmission though, was hoping the regear would cure the transmission gear hunting.

Overall, install was a success and I'm a happy camper.

Thanks for putting the group buy together and to west coast gear for the work

have you done maintenance on the transmission? do a fluid change at a minimum and/or have it checked out by a transmission shop. If you are towing, make sure it's good to go before hitting the road. I changed fluids and a ton of the wonky behavior went away.

The transmission fluid isn't fresh right now but its been maintained.

Truck started hunting for gears after the lift and tires, only does it when it's loaded down and going up hill. Worst when its on cruise control.

Changed my front diff fluid today (finally).

Bent my breaker bar and my skid plate bolts were stripped. Yikes.

    After investigation...

I don’t think it’s then tightening it too tight. I spoke with a couple techs and they all said the front diff is a nightmare, and they heat up the plug before trying to remove it.

The front diff also strips easy (mine was toast after changing the oil). I replaced mine with the Lexus plug that uses a 12mm socket, should help for the next time.

    Too few to list.
I’m still debating 4.56 vs 4.88 on my truck. It’s not my daily but when I travel across states I use my truck and some highways are 80mph speed limit and need to figure out my rpms before making my gear choice.

    If you're doing 80mph on 33in tires i would go 4.56

At 70ish on the road the engine is at around 2500rpm for me in my 2nd gen.

I was calculating what my rpms would be 4.56 vs 4.88.
    Stock 3.73 @ 70mph is just above 2K and 80mph just above 2300.
    4.56 @70 is just below 2500 and 80@ 2840
    4.88 @70 2660 and 80@ 3039.

I’m still leaning towards 4.88. I think what I take away from this is not to go 80mph for long period of time.

I read in the 5.29 that the throttle governor is activated at 85 with that gearing. Anybody max speed on 4.56 or 4.88?

I have seen ~95 with 4.88's, didn't hit the governor just didn't choose to go faster (I am running OVTune 2.0 87 4.88). I think OVTune has a solution to the 5.29 governor issue that some are having.

    I can't get passed 83 with 5.29. Fastest I've gone was 85 on a downhill..

..... gettin' a little old to drive to CA from NH for this but I still think of it !

I ask around here and the only guy I talked to that "really" seemed to know his stuff and does this kind of work cautioned me that I may not like the result and said I would have to sign something upfront to that effect to hold him harmless.
